DPF Removal and Cleaning

Hi All
I have a 2008 T31 with a M9r turbo diesel
On 2 recent trips I seem to be loosing boost from the turbo, with a lack of the normal power.
I have looked and researched as much as I can about the system and this could be DPF related.
My vehicle is a Japanese one with a manual regeneration button.

You basically push it and the engine revs, does its clean cycle then finished, usually about 10-15 minutes and this is done sitting on the drive at home, rather than any other time as revving the engine could result in driver error and crashes.

This has not manually regenerated for a while and suspect the warning light and lack of boost could be due to a blocked DPF. I have viewed people removing them and using a jet was to clean them out. Has anyone out there actually done this?

How hard is it to get the DPF out of the Xtrail?
Did the clean work?
Any handy tips / recommendations before I break something?
What would the symtoms of a blocked DPF be?
When I scanned the code when not boosting it said "no boost" without a fault code, so reset it and cleaned the EGR valve, so far all good, but could be missing the underlying issue

Thanks Andy

Re: DPF Removal and Cleaning

Hey, yeah I have an 09 xtrail dci m9r. A few years back my DPF light came on and had heard some horror stories of having to get a new DPF etc. I took it to my mechanic who did a manual burn using his special scan tool. Light went off and everything was ok for a few months and then it happened again. A friend of mine illegally drilled his DPF out which I was not willing to do, but also did NOT want to spend thousands on a new DPF.

Anyway, I ended up biting the bullet and figured I would try and clean this thing myself.... I jacked the car up and took the dpf off (I have a pdf service manual) it wasn't that hard from what I remember. Anyway I didnt have chemicals or anything I soaked mine in a hot bath tub of water for a while then got the karcher out and jammed it down its neck and blew it out for ages in both directions. There was lots of grey particle matter coming out. let it drip dry etc, put it back in the car and borrowed my mechanics scan tool and ran a burn (should have seen the steam come out emoticon ) Took it for a bit of a drive and finally the DPF light went out. That was several years back and I have never seen the light come on again and never had an issue with it since.

I am sure there are other methods of cleaning it with chemicals, I have even heard of coke to try to dissolve stuff?

Hope it works out for you.

Re: DPF Removal and Cleaning

Before you try taking the dpf off and cleaning it (which i've done and didn't make a huge difference) get a decent odb2 sensor and iphone app and look at the soot mass and dpf differential pressure.

Mine normally hits about 30g before doing a regen on the motorway - you'll also be able to looks at boost pressure etc.

Re: DPF Removal and Cleaning

On our XTrail the dpf light came on and so took it to a mechanic who did a manual burn.
Now the light is out but the DPF light is out but the check engine light is on with a P1435 code.
DPF has had too many forced regents.

If we try to cancel that code it asks us if this is a NEW DPF and so mechanic not sure to do it or not as it may do something bad the the DPF it thinks it’s new and had to run at a different setting.
Thoughts ??
