Small mirror on front Left - why is it there T31 diesel

Hi all
There is a small molded in painted mirror on the front left guard/wing of my T31 diesel but is also found on most of the Xtrails I have seen.

What is it meant to see?
How do you adjust it?

I am a white water kayaker and have roof racks on and want to move the mirror so you can see the kayaks on the roof rather than looking to nothing in particular.

The wing mirrors on the door corners have the control for the driver to adjust, but nothing for this small mirror with no use if not adjusted.

Any help as I have tried pushing the mirror and it seems fairly well attached and cannot see any adjusters or room for it to move unless it has to be moved from the underside of the front guard, but that doesn't seem logical if meant to be a mirror designed to see something.

Thanks Andy

Is your T31 a Japanese import Andy ?
Often they have a small mirror on the guard to help see the curb at the rear wheel.
What do you see when you look at it from the driver's seat ?

Maybe you could get one of the round fish-eye wide view stick-on mirrors from an auto shop and stick it onto the mirror. They usually have a twisting adjustment of the offset lens to allow you to adjust the mirror to look at a particular angle.

Yes Japanese
You can see the road in it if your lucky
Thank you Kev - but there was no twist adjustment
I have just been out to the Xtrail and couldn't twist it. I stuck the key in the side of the mirror and levered it out. It has plastic push clips on the back and goes into a flat plastic backing with holes for location -no adjustment at all as it is the same molding as the base. The only way I can see to adjust it is to file/cut off some of the luggs on the back and block out the other side to hold it in position wanted. Lucky for me I'm at work and have the hot knife to melt the plastic

It looks to be one of these cosmetic things with no real use, but other vehicles have them

Done much better - it may fall out and break now knowing my luck.

I was referring to the stick-on mirror you can buy which has a twist adjustment, not the mirror on your Xtrail.

Yes you should be able to see the curb in that mirror. It is used for parallel parking.

Re: Small mirror on front Left - why is it there T31 diesel

After getting serious with it and thinking it is coming off if I cannot adjust it, I felt around on the inside of the front wing until I felt the mounting bolts with plastic around them and realised it mounted from the inside and went down into the guard.
Out came the screw driver again and flicked off the painted cover of plastic and broke one of the holding in clips on the back.

It had star security screws going down and undid them. I tried blocking up the angle with washers but needed more height on the front edge under the mirror glass to get to my goal of seeing the roof, so cut a lump of close cell foam to the size of the foot in a wedge shape. To get the angle I wanted the screws were too short, so just used one at the back of the unit closer to the front of the car. This also allowed me to twist the new set up to get the position I want and seems to stay in place nicely, so job done apart from re assembling and holding the outer painted cover on with insulation tape as a trail run to see how it goes to be potentially glued. The foam with one screw seems to be holding nicely after 10 days or so

You have to look for the difference it doesn't stick out like dog balls, will try and get a pic up if I can work out how to attach it as I'm a techno phobe
