Springwood to Eyre Peninsula

We've just returned from a two week trip to the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.

Into one X-trail we piled four adults, luggage, sleeping bags, pillows etc and a 32 - litre Waeco fridge! Believe me, it was loaded to the gunwhales but remained comfortable and performed effortlessly.

Our accommodation varied from on-site cabins, motels and one fabulous holiday villa.

Our ultimate destination was Baird Bay, a hundred clicks or so east of Ceduna. We went out via Cobar, Broken Hill, Port Augusta and back via Coffin Bay, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Renmark, Mildura, Hay and West Wyalong - about 5,000kms in all.

The main point of the trip was to swim with dolphins and sealions at Jones Island, at the entrance to Baird Bay. Unfortunately, it was blowing a gale on the days we were booked on the big diving boat and we never got out. We did manage some swimming and inshore fishing, though (if you like King George Whiting there's plenty to be had).

For the first time I used an in-car navigation system to help us find some out of the way places (CoPilot 6 running on a Dell Axim X51v with a Haicom Bluetooth GPS unit.). Just for fun I planned the entire trip in it and apart from one glitch which I think was my fault, it was extremely accurate.

Best things we saw?

- Broken Hill is amazing - lots of museums and galleries - and I wish we'd had more time.

- The Mannahill pub on the road to Port Augusta is worth a stopover. Talk about a collection of bric a brac and interesting local characters!

- Port Augusta was a pleasant surprise with a town centre that's a mixture of modern and old, the best interactive museum I have ever visited and the Arid Lands Garden. I could live there.

- Baird Bay was magic, but apart from a couple of dozen houses there's not much there. It's worth a visit though, particularly if you are into small boat fishing, walking and fresh air. The nearest supplies have to be purchased at Streaky Bay (50+ clicks) or Port Kenny (60 clicks).

- Coffin Bay. You could spend a week there just exploring, fishing and driving on some of the dirt roads. Beautiful.

- Mildura. A great place for exploring the Murray area. There we also had one of the best meals I've ever eaten in a restaurant that uses a process known as 'Stone Grilling'. If you like your meat, chicken or seafood done exactly as you like it, this is the way to go - you cook it yourself at your table on an individual volcanic rock that has been heated in a special oven.

All in all, a great trip which I would recommend - but I would add an extra week next time.
