posticon Sunroof Not Opening

Greetings and salutations,

Not sure if this is an electrical issue, but I have just picked up a 2008 Nissan Xtrail which has a sunroof that won't open.

It will tilt up and open just fine, but when one pushes the button to slide it back, it drops down like it's meant to (I had a Navara with a sunroof so I am familiar with the operation), but then only slides back a few millimetres before stopping.

There is no sounds of servos whirring or clicking or anything. It just stops.

Not sure if this is a problemo with the electrics or if it's a mechanical issue or if the rails are just blocked with a build-up of paperclips, but I thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone has had a similar issue and managed to get the paperclips out.

Re: Sunroof Not Opening

A buildup of paperclips ? What makes you say that ?

It could be a few things
- gears stripped/broken
- out of adjustment/sync
As the sunroof only has a single motor I doubt it is the motor because it is tilting fine.

You should have a Z-shaped tool in the boot with the jack. This is the manual crank for the sunroof and you could use it to wind the sunroof all the way open to make sure it is not jambed due to distorted rails or junk in them.
Be sure to use the handle to move the sunroof back into its closed position if the switch will not close it and we can troubleshoot further.

Re: Sunroof Not Opening

Thanks for the advice, but I went and scoured the back of the vee-hickle for such a z-shaped piece but could not locate such a thing. I found the jack and a funny thing that looks like a big, thick, blunt threaded needle on steroids, but no z-shaped piece.

Can you tell me where on the vee-hickle one would use such a tool to crank the sunroof open manually?

There will be a plastic plug in the centre of the roof lining infront of the boot lamp.
