How to get wire through firewall?

I have a 2004 petrol ST and have just bought some driving lights for it. They came with a wiring harness and my boyfriend was able to wire them up for me except we couldn't work out how to get the wire with the switch on it through the firewall and into the cabin. We found a huge chunk of wires on the driver's side just above the accelerator but it didn't look like you could possibly squeeze anything else through that hole and also seemed inaccessible from the engine bay. Can anyone please tell me how to get the wire through the firewall? Thanks

Re: How to get wire through firewall?

I hope someone with a T30 can answer your question clearly. I have a T31 and there is a firewall cable entry behind the glovebox on the passenger side. It too looked like nothing else could possibly fit through but i used vaseline on a relative thick knitting needle and was able to slide it through the firewall. I had previously drilled a small hole in the end of the knitting needle and had some fine wire attached to the end. I attached 2 x 6bs size power cables to the thin wire, wrapped the connection in electrical tape ensuring no sharp edges etc, smeared vaseline over the join and I was surprised how easy the 2 cables were pulled through without any damage to existing wiring. You might like to try something like that.

Cheers

Re: How to get wire through firewall?

In the T30 there is another grommet on the driver's side, fairly high up on the firewall . You will see it in the engine bay near the driver's side strut tower.

The switch should be connected to the wiring harness with spade connectors which you will need to disconnect before poking through a hole in the unused grommet and then reconnecting to the switch when you mount it into one of the unused positions in the dash to the right of the steering column.

Let me know if you can't find the grommet and I'll post a pic for you.

Thanks revhead kev. I think I found the grommet on the firewall. It had 2 bolts above and below it. Where is it on the inside though? Do you have to take the dash off?

hey dlpeek,
i wasted like an hour looking for somewhere to go thru my firewall (T31) and still couldn't find where to go..... did you take out the whole glovebox or punch out those 3 little tabs at the top of the glovebox inside.....where did the poke come thru in the engine bay?... did you remove the airbox etc to get to wires?

Cheers, Coppo

Re: How to get wire through firewall?

I've found using wiring and harness diagrams super helpful. https://nissan-europe.epc-data.com/x-trail/t31/769/body_electrical/240/

If you can find the part number for the grommet then look it up, that will give you the location. Hope that helps somewhat.

Re: How to get wire through firewall?

Coppo.
I did remove the glovebox only. You will then see where the existing wiring comes through from the engine bay. I just recalled that it was not a plastic knitting needle I used but rather a longer piece of narrow plastic rod which when lubricated with vaseline was easily fed through the grommet in the firewall next to all the other existing wiring. I fed the cable from inside the vehicle into the engine bay. The rod came out between the air filter housing and the passenger side spring/strut housing. The gap is narrow but if your rod is long enough you should be able to grab the end of it and pull it through with the cable etc attached. Lubricating seems to be the trick and even vaseline was applied to the cable itself for the amount I pulled through.

Hope this helps.
Dave

Yes, that's the one. 2 bolts and in the engine bay it sits right next to the brake booster.
In the cabin it sits right next to the accelerator pedal mounting bracket under the dash. You don't need to take the dash apart to reach it but it helps if you are a contortionist emoticon

yo Dave...cheers for the info... i tried this morning again and used an outer cable from mtb bikes and followed through the rear wiper hose that goes through the firewall, its just above the cable for the hood release. The good thing with using mtb outer gear cable is its smooth and has a flexi inner, wire gets stuck but flexi cable move around a bit.... it came out just around the brake fluid filler.
I will take some pics tomorrow for reference...

cheers,
Coppo
