Snow Chains

Ok, this question isn't one for the Aussie X-Trail Forum members. We are heading down to Te Anau to do a two night cruise on Doubtful Sound and a couple of days R&R at Fiordland Lodge.

A bit of a polar blast is coming through early in the week and it's likely that the mountain passes that we'll need to cross will have snow on them and chains will be required.

Just brought a secondhand pair, but should I get another set? and if only one set are needed, front or back?

Re: Snow Chains

Hi Steve,

The requirements here in AUS are that only one pair needs to be carried and for a 4WD vehicle they are optional but recommended for anyone not familiar with driving in snow or ice and must be fitted to the main driving wheels if used.

A word of caution though ... before you leave, check the chains on your front wheels with full left and right lock to make sure there is no rubbing on any panel or internal splashguard

Re: Snow Chains

Hi Kev

Some of our southern roads make it mandatory for vehicles to carry/use chains during winter months, around the Southern Lake the fine is only $150 if the road has "chains required" signs up, on the road into Milford Sound the fine is $750.

Good advice on rubbing potential, the ones I've brought are low profile and the correct size for the Geolanders that are on our excy (225/60/17), so should be fine.
