Replace Standard Headunit in Xtrail 2010 ST T31 with Sony XAV-AX1000

First mod to Bluey! Installed a Sony XAV-AX1000 (Currently on sale a lot at Ryda https://www.ryda.com.au/sony-xav-ax1000-apple-carplay-av-receiver).

Was nearly plugin and play with the following parts...

1. ISO to OEM Factory Nissan (https://aerpro.com/app091)
2. Sony AV to ISO harness 16 pin (https://aerpro.com/app8sp4)
3. Nissan antenna adapter cable (https://aerpro.com/apa69)

Note: I have the base model car, so no phone call or stereo controls on the wheel. Check the harness's you'll need if you have a fancy wheel

Install was simple.

1. Disconnect the car battery
2. Remove fascia and unscrew stereo mounting bracket (see video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-EbxiLmUGg)
3. Remove the old stereo. Laugh at the handwritten warranty note 'George' has scrawled in permanent marker, including a phone number of a guy called Dalton?
4. Put the new stereo in the mountain bracket, lining up the supplied screws with holes marked 'N' for Nissan in the side of the Sony unit.
5. Plug in the harnesses and antenna cable etc
6. Connect the supplied black ground cable to the parking brake cable from the stereo.
7. Connect the ground cable to something metal (I used some unused holes in a metal mounting plate attached to the front brace bar that runs across the car behind the old stereo)
8. Connect the car battery
9. Test the stereo!
10. Once it works, screw the mounted stereo and bracket back in the car and reattached the fascia.

Next upgrade will be reversing camera, rear sensors and when I have time wiring up hands-free microphone to the stereo too.

Well done Nick. I have been thinking about changing mine from stock now that I have decided to keep the car I also have a 2010 exy but ST-L so would need to look at a harness that allows for steering wheel controls (radio/phone etc) as you mentioned. I'll keep thinking about it. Cheers

I believe Aerpro have the correct harness for this too. See https://aerpro.com/chniuni?src=api

That said, I cannot speak to easy it is to install. The PDF doesn't make it look to bad https://aerpro.com/sites/default/files/manuals/chniuni_instructions_1.pdf

All the stuff they sell is at: https://aerpro.com/vehicles/nissan/nissan-x-trail-2007-2013-t31 if anyone else is interested.

Ok so have had reversing camera, rear sensors and microphone installed. If people are interested can see my post for more details. Might also do a more detailed review of daily life with Sony XAV-AX1000 now I've been using it for a few weeks (mainly with Apple Car play).

Thankyou for posting this information. It helped me with choosing an apple car play stereo for our 2011 x-trail. Your links and instructions were great. I ended up getting the ax3000, mainly for the cleaner look as has a rear USB connection. I have patched it up to the sunglasses hatch on the top of the dash. You can open it, plug in the phone, leave the phone in the hatch and go on your way..

I really liked the look of the AX3000 too. Do you have an image you could post showing how you have mounted the USB in the hatch? I think people would be keen to see it as a more cleaner install option.

I've ended connecting my phone to the front USB connection and then placing the phone in the hatch when I use CarPlay, but I agree it looks a bit messy. I think the AX3000 would have a nicer cleaner look for sure.
