2006 xtrail engine problems

Hi I have a 2006 xtrail
Had nothing but problems since the day I bought it from private seller a year ago ..
I asked for refund day after buying it as the head was broken’ ..
he offered to fix it all himself. Told me he had head machined but there was nothing wrong with it‘apparently..
the coolant from radiator overflows when I take cap off .. the radiator overflow keeps emptying itself although there are no leaks visible.. I’ve taken it back to mechanic so many times now.. he told me he would replace timing chain as it had started to make terrible rattling noise on startup.
He said that he would check oil pressure before putting new timing chain in to make sure its not the head .. he ended up adjusting timing chain and told me it should last another 12 months.. 1 week later I started driving to another town and engine light came on .. the coolant is looking darker now and smells funny.
The oil is double what it should be on dipstick although the oil and filter was done a week earlier by the same mechanic.. now I can’t get a straight answer about the head from him .. the bloke I bought car from is mechanics best friend... I’m stumped 😫 ps . The temp gauge doesn’t move from just under half way.. there’s no milky muck under oil cap

I don't understand what he meant by "adjust timing chain".
It is a fixed length with a tensioner and fixed alignment points for all sprockets and links.

If the head has been machined then there should have been a thicker head gasket fitted, otherwise the chain will be too slack which would cause the rattle on startup and possibly skip a tooth on one of the valve sprockets.

Sounds like you have a blown head gasket, or badly fitted one, between a cylinder and the water jacket. This would cause coolant loss and pressurisation of the radiator.

You can check this yourself by taking out all the spark plugs and checking for discolouration on them. The cylinder with the problem should have its spark plug not as clean as the others.

Thanks for the feedback will try the spark plugs and what you said about space between gasket makes sense.

Oil smells like petrol.. checked dipstick today and the level gone down to where it should be but I went on a 150 km drive while it was over-full. Wondering if it’s the rings as I have no oil leaks visible

Re: 2006 xtrail engine problems

Depending on the age of the engine and if a rebuild was done or not, the standard 5W30 oil is too thin and should be 10W40. This is what I had to do as my Xtrail engine got past 120,000kms

If you have bad oil rings then your spark plugs should show signs of burning oil.
