The lab called asking to find out what type of oil is being used. I am at mercy of mechanic where I normally take car for service so I am hoping using good quality oil - when I first took my car there and asked it was full synthetic , cannot recall brand. I hope this problem is not caused by cheap oil. I have had the car serviced at the same mechanic for oil/filter etc for past 2 years with no issues. If the oil was cheap or wrong type , how long will it take to cause engine problems? I last had it service at 220,000km and was running fine , and the failure happened at 225,000km. I did notice an engine clatter when car is idle around 210,000km , and when I slighly put my foot on accelerator it would go away and we did check for this and thought it was 2 pieces of metal hose touching so am wandering if this was the first sign of trouble and was not picked up. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Toros72)Sat, 01 Aug 2020 10:55:11 +0000 Re: 2nd Turbo Failure - EGR Valve ?https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2097722,from=rss#post2097722https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2097722,from=rss#post2097722Your mechanic was correct in saying a blocked EGR valve could cause the turbo failure. The turbochargers in the diesel Xtrail use Variable Nozzle Technology where the vanes of the exhaust side of the turbocharger close to alter the boost provided at low RPM and open at high RPM to avoid overspeeding. The EGR valve operates to lower the exhaust gas temps and reduce nitric oxides but at the expense of increasing carbon deposits. If the EGR valve is stuck closed by these excessive carbon deposits, the exhaust gas temp increases and over a prolonged period could cause overheating of the oil in the turbocharger with excessive bearing wear. If the EGR valve stuck open it would cause excessive carbon deposits causing the variable vanes in the turbocharger to stick closed and the turbocharger to overspeed at higher RPMs. Bypassing the EGR valve I expect would cause exactly the same results of higher exhaust temps with higher turbocharger temps and the resulting damage caused from it. The higher engine temps could also cause head gasket failures.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Fri, 31 Jul 2020 23:07:50 +0000 2nd Turbo Failure - EGR Valve ?https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2097717,from=rss#post2097717https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2097717,from=rss#post2097717 I have a 2009 Xtrail 2.0 Litre diesel turbo , the M9 I believe is the engine. At 168000 I had a turbo fail , went to specialist who advised me that EGR valve was blocked thus causing failure, and replaced the turbo and also BYPASS the EGR electronically . Now I have a 2nd failure at 220,000 so just 60,000km later. I spoke to Nissan dealer advising me bypassing EGR valve not recommended. When I mention this to the specialist center they are adamant its not related. They are also stating wanting to check the oil and make sure engine is now OK as it could be gone. Im thinking WTF , I brought car to you , they bypass EGR , and now my turbo has failed quite possibly because of this method. I take my car to mechanic to have oil, filter fuel filter changed every 10.000km. I am the 2nd owner and have did 180,000km Always serviced, never mistreated. Any advice is much appreciatednondisclosed_email@example.com (Toros72)Fri, 31 Jul 2020 11:51:19 +0000
