T31 Diesel engine failure

Hello

I had a rough idle on the T31 diesel (2012 - m9r). It has done about 250,000 kms. I took it to a diesel mechanic near Canberra and after a diagnostic, it was found to have lost most compression in cylinder 2. The outlook for the car was not good, as the cost of engine replacement ($10k) is a lot more than the value of the car.

Would anyone have any ideas on what to do with the car?

I have since had to get another car, so I am in no rush.

the Xtrail can still be driven on 3 cylinders, but I feel the whole engine can stop at anytime.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

cheers

Matt

Re:

If you can't sell your car privately to someone who needs parts, try Canberra Scrap Metal. They'll collect it from your place (no tow-away fee) and give you a couple of hundred dollars for it.

Yep, it's not much, but at least you're not paying for the towing and then paying the ACT Govt to dump it. emoticon

What did he say was wrong ?
If it is only one cylinder then it could be as simple as a hole in the piston.

Probably good to get more than one opinion and look at a reconditioning cost instead of a replacement, especially since you are not in a rush.

I'm not really knowledgeable with oil changing/engine. I did have a problem, according to my friend, and they took it to the nearest mechanic for me. Karl Knudsen Automotive has been helpful when I encountered this problem. They offer cheap deals and the quality of work is superb!
