No 4wd

Hello

This is my first post after my introduction so hopefully I am in the correct section. I inherited a 2004 ST in very poor condition. All good now except for the lack of 4WD. My mechanic has been broken by trying to diagnose the problem.
Basically he reckons that all electricals are working up to and including the 4wd solenoid in the rear axle.
When I turn the ignition key the ABS light appears very briefly then goes out (a fraction of a second). The 4wd drive and lock light also appear for a brief period and there is a whiring sound from the rear of the car (the solenoid?) then the lights go out. This happens in every setting (2wd auto and lock mode) The orange 4wd warning light is also on and stays on until the vehicle is shut down
I simply cannot take it back to the mechanic as he is old school and won't charge unless the car is fixed. He has spent weeks on it, the poor bloke.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated
Regards
Andy

Re: No 4wd

I'd have to check the X-Trail service manual, but on my Pathfinder that would mean the ECU/TCU is not getting 'sane' sensor readings from the ABS rings to determine that all 4 wheels are turning. As the ABS light isn't activated, that sorta rules out the ABS sensors, so I think that car might have the mis-matched ABS sensor rings on the axles some have posted here about?

Do you know if a new drive shaft was fitted at any time...front or rear?

If not, I'd start looking for a stripped crown wheel or pinion in the rear diff....if the car does actually drive/move somewhat.

Knowing what happens when you put the car up on 4x stands, in 4WD LOCK would also help (any wheels not turning?)

Re: No 4wd

I must add I have trawled this site for every scrap of information, also the internet. The only idea I have is that there is a faulty ABS sensor despite the fact the ABS seems to be working (from what I read the systems are interlinked). I took them off and cleaned and inspected them. All wiring and connections look solid.
Cheers

Cheers Wiz AU

No shafts have been changed so yes the pinion gear could be damaged. Sigh... I guess i's a good idea to put it up on stands and see if the drive shaft is "free wheelin".

Re: No 4wd

If the 4WD lamp is permanently illuminated then it would indicate a 4WD relay fault so have him replace that.
ABS sensor fualts or incorrect tire sizes are usually indicated by a flashing 4WD indicator.

Has the resistance of the 4WD solenoid been checked to see if it is open circuit ?

Re: No 4wd

Cheers for the quick reply Kev.

I have decided to try a new mechanic, so will start with your advice. He is a young bloke who has Fridays off to work on his own vehicle and has offered to put mine up on the hoist.

I have a big chunk of work 'til after New Year so may take a while to get an answer to your question but keen to get your continued input

Thanks

Andy

Re:

Look forward to hearing the diagnosis on this one.

I also have an old t30 and the day after getting the airbag recall done I have lost my all wheel drive light on the dash. Seems like too much of a coincidence to me so am hoping Nissan may have dislodged something by mistake in the changeover.

Edit: I have now discovered it was just an instrument panel bulb which was easily replaced with advice from forum members.

Re: No 4wd

Hi all my xtraill has just developed the 4wd drive lamp fault.
today I started on a track and selected auto, seemed to work fine after some time I realised the 4wd lamp was on solid and no selection available. switched off and restart same.

we stopped for lunch 45 minutes and all returned as normal, after 30 minutes or so in auto mode and selecting lock for about 10 minutes, fault condition reappeared until switch off again for 15 minutes.
seems it may be heat related but not sure nothing seemed that warm today.
all help greatly appreciated.

kind regards Ted
