front sub frame, rt front strut & control arm

my regular mechanic diagnosed these for replacement after i asked him to check the recent knock at the rt front area.
sub frame bushes cannot be replaced and whole sub frame must be fitted. 667 dollars.
strut 697
control arms are 360 each, all these prices from a nissan dealer.
+labour of course so not much change outa 2500. i picked myself off the floor and said my goodbyes.
i see from a much earlier post here that someone fitted their own struts, kyb or something so that i could do. but the other stuff is chinese to me.
so, are kyb the way to go? any ideas on suppliers for the other stuff? pedders? i'm an hour south of the queensland border so browns plains would be the nearest. thanx in anticipation.
roads around here are like swiss cheese and i'm up to 210k.

Re: front sub frame, rt front strut & control arm

Myself and another member have written about how to do the control arms for a T30 in this thread.
Have a look at how similar your T31 is to see if it might help.

Here is a link to the write up when I installed my strut spacers. It will let you know what is needed to remove and replace the strut.

Re: front sub frame, rt front strut & control arm

thanks a lot for your detailed installation rev. i'm not sure how it started but i was convinced i had a T31 until i checked the insignia thingy on the back and discovered it is a TS dci. meanwhile, the rattles are increasing. next move is to phone/call in to nissan and check what fits what.

Re: front sub frame, rt front strut & control arm

Control arms usually do not need replacing as a whole unless they are damaged or bent, just new bushes or ball joints fitted. But my motor parts supplier has full replacement lower control arms for many cars at prices that make changing a ball joint or a bush uneconomical, and it's just easier to replace the whole arm.

Check here and see if SuperPro do a bush for it....

Replacement SuperPro alloy control arms (two - left & right as a pair) with poly bushes and new ball joints appear to run about $560 for the pair. These are a 'Premium' product and there would be lower cost options I am sure.

But you say the 'sub-frame' also requires replacement bushes...is that what I might call the 'diff carrier'?? (Except the diff and engine and gearbox are all one part on this vehicle, so it's more like an "engine mount" really)

If you PM me your VIN, I can post up some pictures of the parts diagrams from my Nissan FAST CDROM, and provide Nissan Part Numbers so you can Google around for prices and verify the story you have been given.

Amayama is also a good place to look for cheap genuine parts.
Easy if you have the Nissan part number otherwise you can use their online parts lookup.

Re: front sub frame, rt front strut & control arm

thanx for the recent advice/assistance. am concentrating on the front shockies at the moment. rt one leaking oil and virtually useless. what passes for roads in this area is a series of holes with bitumin in between. have spotted a pair of webco shockies for $264 for 2 on the net which appear identical except for the bracket which recieves a torsion arm link. yet it is the one listed for the T31. (my TS dci is apparently a T31 after all) as they do not show all views of it in the illustration it may be ok and i will probably go for these unless i am warned off it.

this whole drama took place 2 months after the car passed rego check with flying colors. so i doubt the control arms are urgent.
superpro DO stock bushes for them.

Re: front sub frame, rt front strut & control arm

checked amayama rev and as i did not have a number for the strut, (it was missing off the 401 front suspension exploded view) i looked up their models. a TS grade was not listed amongst the 03 to -10 models so i tried a manual SE and a strut goes for AUS $233 each it seems. the prices are all in US dollars right thru to the checkout. that was posted from japan so maybe its plus postage. the oz one was a lot dearer from amayama.
