The inland tracks were pretty bad this time around. Having installed the full cat back exhaust coupled with the cold air intake system the xtrail was noticeably more adept. Running at 16 psi it literally cruised through the course, 90% of the time in auto switching between 1st and 2nd. There were just a few occasions where I turned on the diff lock. No hint of bogging, quite impressive and definitely a step up, you would have easily managed the inland tracks judging by this experience. Note that I’d also had some extra clearance added in the past and that also helps. Overall trip (2 days) covered Inskip to barge up to Eurong across to lake McKenzie onto kingfisher then eastern track to Cromwell beach exit up to Maheno and including happy valley high tide detour then back to kingfisher via lake McKenzie and central station. Car seems to be getting better with age! Planning to keep for another 10+ years as in the process of upgrading to Tesla electrics, first with on road then in years to come their pickup truck looks interesting, towing capacity ~100t!nondisclosed_email@example.com (TJAALS)Fri, 09 Nov 2018 12:00:14 +0000 Re: Fraser Island triphttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2095278,from=rss#post2095278https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2095278,from=rss#post2095278Thanks for your report. Clear concise and unambiguous. nondisclosed_email@example.com (senior12)Tue, 30 Jan 2018 19:44:13 +0000 Fraser Island triphttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2093137,from=rss#post2093137https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2093137,from=rss#post2093137Thought I would post up some info about my recent trip to Fraser Island. I know there a couple of threads already, but I found doing my own research in prep for the trip I didn't find exactly what I was after. First of all, the amount of misinformation and hero bogans out there is something to be mindful of when doing research. A lot of the more general 4WD forums openly slander XTrails and other "soft roaders", and this proved to be a source of doubt for myself but moreso my partner who was a bit nervous about the trip. So, my vehcile is an unmodified T31 TI Petrol CVT 4WD. For this trip away we went to Fraser with some friends, both of whom have more capable 4WD hiluxes. We stayed at Dundaburra campsite which is about 2 Thirds of the way up the East side of the island, and departed from Inskip point. The spot dropping off the sealed road onto the sand to board the barge was probably the closest we came to getting bogged. I let my tyres down to 16PSI, locked it in 4WD and selected 1st gear and nailed it all the way through. I would recommend turning off traction control as I could feel this kicking in and affecting my momentum. I turned it off on the way home and got through with no worries at all. Driving up the beach was completely fine, and at low tide we kept up with all other vehicles and sat on around 80k's per hour in 2WD/Auto. The only hairy bits were at the entries and exits to areas where a lot of vehicles use the same track. Ride clearance was the only issue I had, and felt the car bottom out on a lot of the deeper rutted tracks, and water crossings. I actually tore my rear bar from the water pooled at Eli Creek, but got through otherwise ok. I didn't use the car for any inland tracks, and travelling with our friends through to Lake Mackenzie, Indian Heads etc, I could confidently say we made the right decision. The Xtrail just wouldnt have the clearance for some of the worn down tracks, and I think the transmission would get hot working through soft sand for prolonged periods. With that being said, we got through Inskip without a worry (a Navara behind us actually got stuck). So, in summary it is fine to take your XTrail onto the sandy island, but would recommend following the couple of tips I mentioned. As always it is wise to travel with another vehicle and have all the gear (which we had but didnt need). We had the perfect scenario of having friends to travel with for the hard stuff. I think the Xtrail would have got through some of the heavier stuff if it wasn't too worn down, but again clearance would be the biggest hurdle.nondisclosed_email@example.com (sonnyq)Mon, 30 Jan 2017 12:37:22 +0000
