My friend has a 2004 2.5 petrol X-Trail with the auto transmission. For the last few weeks, it's simply missing out second gear - revving way up to 3,500rpm in first, then dropping straight into third gear. Using the stick to try and manually select 1, 2 and then D produces exactly the same results - someone's stolen second! First and third don't seem to be 'slipping' at all - it drives normally, accelerates like you'd expect in those gears, no revs rising out of sync with road speed etc. She's looking at the thick end of £250 (430 AUD) just to remove the box and have a look inside, and the same again to put it all back. If the box is knackered, there's a bill of £1800 (just over 3000 AUD) to replace with a reconditioned unit. My question is: is this something anyone else has come across? Is this a known fault, or does anyone know what the parts are that may have worn out? Is a recon box the only viable solution? The trans fluid is darker than normal, by the way - brown rather than red. Hoping someone can help out! Cheers! Carlosnondisclosed_email@example.com (CarlosTheJackal)Fri, 26 Aug 2016 20:19:25 +0000
