clunking noise from rear T30 auto 2016

Just a problem and a solution in case any body else has same issue. A metallic clunking started around the rear wheel area and became progressively louder over months. The sound only was there when driving forward with or without throttle power. It stopped at speed over 35ks or when lightly putting pressure on the brake pedal. Pulled the road wheel off a number of times couldn't see any thing obvious but thought I could replicate the noise by turning the axle shaft. Bugger, down to a mechanic as I needed to do some heavy towing that weekend and didn't have time to start pulling axles and drive joints apart. Mechanic said sounded bad really bad probably need to replace drive joints etc. Booked it in but due to bad weather cancelled my towing job so cancelled the mechanic as I was still curious and wanted a second look. Found the problem. Jalalski will have guessed as I think he has mentioned this in some thread. The after market brake pads (Repco brand) that I fitted ages ago seem to have slightly smaller tags or ears that fit into the anti rattle clips and the overall length of the pad backing plate is also slightly smaller. This has allowed the pad to come loose in the clips and was getting picked up on a disc high spot then dropping back at each wheel revolution. Just squeezed the rattle clip in to secure the pad and all good! I have changed brake pads all my life and never had this happen so never thought to check fitment into the clip as part of the routine. Live and learn..... Anyway hope this may help someone one day.

Re:

Good stuff Peter and I bet you just saved yourself a fortune, as the mechanic would have probably changed something that didn't need to be changed.

It drove me crazy when it happened to me straight after I fitted brand new pads.
