Canoe on roofracks Hi all i have searched and have not found, i have 5 metre 3 person canoe and i would like to put that on my roofracks, the canoe is very light but awkward as in width i have the racks vortex flush mount bars but my canoe is just as wide so i need a extension for both racks and i donot have a bull bar or towbar, and i need tie down point for front and back any ideas please.

generally there are 2 types of kayak/canoe the J-style where the boat is on its side and a side or rear loading where the boat is upright. I've used the Rhino Nautic 580 for kayaks and surf skis and they work well. I've seen quite a few people carry recreational sit-on-top kayaks and canoes on roof racks on cars smaller than the x-trail. These carriers come with straps to tie the canoe down. If in doubt, do a google image search for "canoe roof racks" to help visualise how they work.
Tie down points, as you don't have a tow bar, can be either the tow points or you can get bonnet anchors that you stick under your bonnet or boot lid - Rhino has them for $10 each or about $30 with a strap.
