5 Day Camping Trip with T32 TL

Hi All,

I have just finished a five day camping holiday in the Victoria High country in the T32 TL X-Trail. I went with my Sister and Brother-in-Law and some of their friends. They are all hardcore 4WD enthusiast and looked at the T32 TL X-Trail as a toy car. The first day we traveled from Wodonga to the Buckland Valley, via Mt Buffalo (we actually came across a Mazda 3 negotiating this bush track). Set up camp in the Buckland Valley. Next day they wanted to go 4WDriving and said the X-Trail wouldn't make it, so the wife and I had to go as passengers in a Mitsubishi Triton. By the end of the day I hadn't seen much that I reckon I couldn't have done in the X-Trail. The next day was the same, we went as passengers in the Triton. On Thursday the Brother-In-Law arranged an 'X-Trail' friendly route. When we got onto the track, he stops and says this is worse than he remembered. He says to me, you can turn back now or keep going and if it gets too rough, you can turn around. Well I followed his Nissan Patrol the entire track and the couple in a Nissan Patrol following me said they where amazed that the T32 TL X-Trail performed so well. They now have a new found respect for the humble T32 TL X-trail. Today the Brother-In-Law didn't bother looking for a 'X-Trail Friendly Track' and took the route that he would normally take his Nissan Patrol, again the T32 TL X-Trail handled everything that was thrown at it. All in all, had a great time and now have shown some hardcore 4WD enthusiast that the T32 TL X-Trail is not a toy 4WD.

I will write up a full trip report over the next couple of days.

Cheers

John

Re:

The 4wd capabilities on the xtrail are only limited by it's small 'toy' diffs that you can't flog for long, and the limited ground clearance.

The only time I had my t31 properly stuck was navigating off a narrow stretch of level beach to get around a bogged patrol. Eventually managed to crab up to higher ground and get back onto something level, it was all good.

Power/weight ratio which is usually more important than outright power of a t31 diesel is somewhere between a 4 and 6 cyl turbo diesel patrol, so more than capable.

Thanks guys. I am waiting for the pics taken by the patrol that was following me and I also have the my dashcam footage that I am going to upload to youtube.

I also forgot to mention that I averaged 8.3 LT / 100 Km over the 5 days.

Cheers

John

Not driving it for 2 days while you were in the Triton helped with that emoticon

Hi Kev,

How does not driving the car contribute to the fuel economy?

Cheers

John

Re:

Well John, Kev is hinting that you averaged your fuel consumption over the 5 day trip and 2 of those days you guys were passengers in the Triton as your initial report stated, so you average fuel consumption should have been calculated over the 3 days period emoticon

Also if you had used your Xtrail on those 2 days then there would be more low-speed kms which would have had higher consumption and push your average up more.
