Trip north of Perth

Sandy Cape Recreation Park and North Head

240km North of Perth and 15km North of Jurien Bay it’s the perfect place for a quick weekend getaway.

Sandy Cape can be accessed with a 2wd vehicle but 4wd will really get you to the best spots. There is an information board just before the campsite indicating the various camping locations as well as the 4wd tracks.

The recreation park offers a lot for the outdoor explorer. Camping behind the sand dunes gazing at the stars and listening to the sound of the waves making their way onto the beach as you go to sleep, kayaking or standup paddle boarding in small sheltered bays looking out for dolphins and seals, fishing off the various beaches or use a boat to get to some of the sheltered reefs for fish such as Snapper, Herring or Tailor.

Although I’ve visited this area many times, I had never driven out to North Head were you will find the RAAF concrete shelters. The shelters were built around 1940 to accommodate motors, these would generate electricity for a radar which was used during the war to warn of invading troops.

Today there are still two shelters standing intact which you can visit. then think back to what it must have been like to work there during that time.

For this trip I decided to film the journey from Sandy Cape to North Head stopping off at some beautiful view points along the way.
