Mouldy and Musty Air-Con Smell

Hi,
My x-trail 2013 T-31 has a mouldy and musty smell. I already changed the pollen filter, did the Glen-20 process, turns off the aircon and run on fan mode and recirculate off 5 minutes before I arrived to my destination and it still smells mouldy.

I spoke with my trusted mechanic and they think that it could be that my aircon drain hose is clogged. I can see water dripping when I use the air-con but they think it might need to be checked.

What do you think guys? I am beginning to hate my x-trail because of this issue.

Re: Mouldy and Musty Air-Con Smell

You say that you've changed the pollen filter. Good.
You did the old "spray Glen 20" all around the cabin. Also good.
This only leaves two, yes two, possibilities.....the drain hose is partially blocked, ie, you've got drain water backing up into the air con system. I know you've said that you see the hose dripping after using the air con, but it is a possibility that, with a partial blockage, not ALL of the water is getting away. Remove the drain hose and thoroughly clean it. Also check the air con end, to ensure there's no blockage up there.
Second possibility...are you certain that you have no other water leaks? Around the windows, all doors, front and rear windscreens? Sit inside the car and have someone spray water, at a high pressure, from a hose, and simply observe that there's no water getting in.
If you've got a "mouldy and musty smell", you've got water INSIDE the car.
Good luck. :-)

Thanks, mate. I will try to crawl underneath my x-trail tomorrow. Thanks goodness I have lost 11 inches of waistline already.

Re: Mouldy and Musty Air-Con Smell

Excellent advice by BPxtrail and that should solve the problem.

If that does not solve your problem then there may be a small patch of mould left over from a previous water intrusion.

In a confined space it does not take much mould to produce an overpowering smell.

Then it is a case of finding the source which will involve lifting all of the carpeting to do a visual inspection for spores.

If you find a spot, spray it with a mix of vinegar and a few drops of oil of cloves to kill the spores.

Mould killing is an inexact science but googling vinegar & cloves will give you the idea.emoticon

Re: Mouldy and Musty Air-Con Smell

Does your Xtrail have a sunroof ?
If so, there are 4 drain hoses, one in each piller, which can become blocked with dust and stop water draining away from the channel around the sunroof. This causes water to leak into the headlining and if enough, all the way down onto the floor and under the carpets. Check the footwells under the driver's and passenger's seat for dampness too.
