Has anyone been down to Nutysland Nature reserve from Cocklebiddy side, to the old Eyre Telegraph Station,
not in from the Esperance side?
I would be travelling by self, so advice re softness of sand and track condition would be great.

Hey Gail, I can only comment from coming from Esperance, I found it fine, all depends what the weather is like, if it has or is raining then the sand wont be so fluffy.

Its a great drive, i done it completely solo and it worked out fine, but just remember in that area is extremely remote, so if something goes wrong you may not see another vehicle for days.

When are you doing it? I'm heading out there during Easter and coming from that end. From what I have read, the Eyre Bird Observatory is only low range and high clearance.

Expect to hit it 27th April.
Also heard about the low range/high clearance, but was hopeful it was exaggerated.

Have a 2" lift, but will be travelling solo. Have a sat phone for emergencies, but the idea is not getting into situations where i need to use it.
The bird observatory sounded great.

I'll keep looking for your report.
Cheers

Re:

Will try to get a detailed report up tomorrow but depends on what I'm doing. I didn't do all the old telegraph track but it's doable in the exy on the sections I did. Just expect lots of scratches as they are not very well traveled tracks. I didn't need low range to get to the Eyre Bird Observatory but there are some sections with deep soft sand and the exy may struggle in those sections. The track in doesn't look too bad at the start but as you go in more, it will get softer and deeper.

I did try to use tracks on the HEMA but some of them don't exist any more. To avoid wasting time, backtrack once you are not on the track anymore.

Like I said, I'll try to get the trip report up some time tomorrow if not, later in the week.

Heard back from the caretakers, and they say def high clearance for the rock steps.
Also I didn't realise there is no camping and it's $90/night but they will collect you from transmission tower if staying 2 nights. As I'm away 2 months, this won't be in the budget. (if win lotto while away can call in on way back at end of May LOL).
Saw a video of a group who came in from the west, via Twilight cove. There was a whale 50m from the beach!!!
Also showed the track not suitable for a lone Exy- very deep ruts. They had trouble with one of the landcruisers.
Sooo, now thinking about Parmango rd, or else via hwy to Dundas Rocks, then on to Cape LeGrand or cape Arid.
ETA Dundas Rocks Thurs 28th and then 2 days in a NP in area.
It's all good, never been anywhere near area, so delighted at anything.

Re:

There are rock steps and needed low range to Twilight Cove but don't recall any to the observatory. If there were, they didn't warrant low range. Clearance is the main issue. Cape Le Grand is a good run along Wylie Beach to town. Just go at low tide. Cape Arid from what I've read has sections that are low range and high clearance only. What are you doing on the return leg?

Won't be coming back through Esperance area.
May check with Eyre then on 25th/26th May- maybe early whales.
Going to spend a few days at Streaky Bay and then the Whyalla area- giant squid should be spawning then, and hope to dive among them.
