posticon Converting the marshmellow's handling.

Hello wise people,

Another newby joins up.

I have just bought a good 2nd hand X Trail T3 born 1/1/2008.

I have scoured the net and this forum and just have trouble finding simple stuff to cure the X Trail's marshmellow like cornering, and tendings to lean somewhat like a camel facing Mecca, which is very off putting to me as I have come from a nice handling road car which had light final understeer..

I want to keep this car the same height and have been considering:
1/ Rear sway bar
and/or
2/ Strengthened coil springs
and/or
3/ Front Strut Bars.

I don't want to convert it into a hard riding beast but a little firmer than it is.

All the mods I have seen seem to be for the T30 pre 07 models, not T3.

Could you please let me know if you can provide any idea where I am going to procure any of this equipment.

Also if you have any other suggestions.

Looking forward to your words of wisdom,

Steve.

An easy but expensive method to get better handling is to switch to 18" rims with suitable tyres. Having said that, you should be able to sell your used rims and tyres to help off the cost.

Re: Converting the marshmellow's handling.

Hi Steve,

Remember the Xtrail is a tallish 4WD, not a sedan so you should expect some more body roll.

Having said that, what tyres do you have and what pressure are you running them ?
I noticed when going from the standard 215/16/65 upto a higher profile 225/16/70 that there was a little more body roll because of the increased sidewall height, so maybe going down a profile might help but if you intend to do off-roading don't decrease below the 65 profile or else there will not be enough sidewall to stop cutting on rocks when you deflate your tyres.

Re: Converting the marshmellow's handling. Re:

Thanks for your input Kev.

I realise that a bit more roll is to be expected.

I have found perhaps something that is effecting it a bit. The car has a set of Kenda Komet fitted.
These are just bugetry normal sedan type tyres, running normal pressure. My feeling is that there is probably more flexing and knuckling under as the side walls are not as stiff as the SUV/ commercial type tyres.

As I have always considered premium tyres to be a safer tyre with better handling, stopping and last longer than the budget tyre. I have ordered a set of Michelin Latitude Tour HP that will be fitted on Monday.

Hopefully this shall solve a bit of the problem.

I still cannot find a seller of Strut bars, coils or sway bars to fit the 07 -13 Xey. But a heap who supply these items for the pre 07s. Any reason for this or are (say) the springs the same???

Thanks for your input.

Steve
