Repairing panel damage

Hi all,

About 12 months ago I backed my car into a crudely cut pole in an alleyway car park and did some damage to the left hand panels of my X trail. Whilst unsightly, I chose to let it slide as I'm studying full time at the moment so don't have a heap of spare cash. Recently I've decided that it's time to try and fix it up.

I took the car to a few panel beaters and was quoted from $1,800 to $2,300 to fix it. This was to remove and repaint the door, panel and rear bumper and fix the damage to the panel. To me this is far too expensive, so I'm wondering if I can do some of the work myself to keep the cost down.

What i'd like to know is if it's possible for me to buy a black bumper from a wrecker and install it myself? I've finished my studies for the year so have some spare time to do the job properly, and If I can save myself $1,000 or so for a few days of work that'd be great.

In saying that, removing the panel (not the plastic rear bumper or door) looks like it'll be a pain, as it spans from the rear wheel arch to the roof and down the windscreen... so most of the car. Does anyone have any knowledge on how this panel could be removed and whether or not it's something I could do myself?

I figure I should be able to do a reasonable job touching up the scrapes on the door and rear bumper. Sure, it won't be as nice as the work from the panel beaters, but I simply can't justify the $1,800 for their work right now.

Here's some pictures, with a bonus foot emoticon

What do we think? am I an idiot for considering this?

Re:

If the work quoted included a full replacement of the rear bumper and the side panel then the price is pretty reasonable. You can indeed get the rear bumper from the wreckers but the chances of it being black to match your exy are pretty slim, so you might end-up paying for it to be re-sprayed anyway.

How much is your insurance excess?

Re:

The quote was to repair and paint the side panel (It's folded and split, so needs to be welded) and remove and paint the door, rear bumper and fuel flap. In total there was 11 hours of labor in removing and re-installing parts.

I am awaiting a quote from another panel beater who seemed more reasonable though. He noted the damage to the door and rear bumper could be touched up fairly easily, reducing the cost.

I spoke with a wrecker today about a black spoiler and he confirmed that they're wrecking a few T30's at the moment and that I should drop by and have a look at what they have, which I'll do later in the week. He seemed to be in a hurry so I didn't get the chance to ask if any were black and if it's possible/feasable to remove the side panel.

I'm concerned about the difficulty in removing the side panel, which spans most of the car, and a quick search of the net has not yielded anything useful.

Re:

Your damage is considerably more than I copped not long ago, I didn't have major dents just paint damage to mine and I re-sprayed it myself with a colour matched can from Supercheap, Total cost of around $60 for the primer, colour and clear.

I wont say its perfect as it still needs buffing but the colour is a pretty good match.

Ive got a few mates and a son who are in the Smash repair trade and a lot of the price is in the labour for the removal of the parts themselves
