Perth to Cairns solo

Wondering what you think would be the best route to take from mid/late December across to Cairns, id like to do the top end across, but it would be wet season, would this effect travel if just staying on the main roads?

Also the journey would really just be to get to Cairns without doing too much sightseeing on the way over as we're looking to travel down the east coast.

Also in whichever direction you recommend what are the fuel stops like? I get about 600km out of a tank of petrol so maybe two 20 litre jerry cans as extra would be enough just incase?

I will be doing this trip totally solo, solo vehicle and just myself, am i crazy? is this achievable? how long would you say im realistically talking to get to Cairns if im just wanting to get them without sightseeing along the way? how many hours is safe to drive in 1 day would you say?

Just trying to figure out if this is actually doable.

Solo, easily done. Maybe 7-10 days? its about 6350kms
http://www.racq.com.au/travel/trip-planner (add via broome)

Don't drive at night. (1 hr either side of dawn and 1 hr either side of sunset will be the worst times other than complete darkness to travel)
Take a second full spare and possibly think about another spare tyre (any shop can fit and balance as needed, but stock of what you use may not be easily found in remote areas)
Take a PLB that has been registered to you and your vehicle (even if it on loan- update the details)
Watchout for the trucks, take a UHF as well and leave it on ch 40.

Mid to late December should still be fine, keep an eye on the weather charts at each major town (but I wouldn't try for any later)

(I haven't looked into the time as much as I'm planning the other way over 25-30 day time period, with another 15 or so days between Perth and Rockhampton via South-Western NSW.)

Re:

That's the shortest.
If you add Broome as a via it will take you around the top end.

I've driven the Port Augusta to Cloncurry part twice now and I've had no troubles there.

You can camp or get a cabin at Threeways (pretty cheaply 3 yrs ago), before you head east onto the Barkly Highway too.

Last time we did Threeways, NT - Rockhampton, Qld one go. But we did take a break during sunset to avoid the worst of the roos. It was about 20hrs in total.

Re:

You could turn north at Cloncurry up the Matilda Highway to Normanton (with a quick trip up to Karumba on the Gulf), then across via Croydon and Georgetown to the Atherton Tablelands and down to Cairns. Normanton to Mount Garnet section is one of my favourite roads.

I've driven to Darwin from Sunshine Coast & Cairns three times, late in the year, solo. I love going up there for the Wet Season. Mostly in the North you'll have no trouble with rain until after Christmas.

I ended up flying from Perth to cairns as I just couldn't get enough time off work to do that trip.
A trip for another time perhaps
