Hard to Change 2-3?

Evening all,

The wife has a 2011 diesel, manual T31 and on the odd occasion it's been hard getting out of 2nd when heading into 3rd. In the past week it's gotten a lot worse to the point where it could be dangerous. The car has 74,000km on it and the clutch feels and drives aok as does the gearbox other than this issue.

I've searched this forum and the internet generally with no result.

My belief is that the clutch is dragging although I have no explanation as to why it only appears to be on the 2-3 change. My second choice would be shift linkages.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.

Cheers,
Rob

Normally, I'd suspect that worn synchro's would give that particular symptom, but at 74K Km (assuming no collisions) the gearbox should be perfect.

If, as you say that it is hard to get OUT of second, but there is no mention of difficulty in engaging 3rd, then I'd be looking at the selectors (shift linkages).

Usually a damaged synchro ring gives a crunch when changing gear, so hopefully it is not that.

Following your logic, if the clutch was the cause then it should cause problems in all gears and by design the clutch is there to ease entry into the next gear, not facilitate the exit from the one you are leaving.

i.e. one can usually flip into neutral with a manual box without issue, but to engage the next gear without a crunch, requires either a clutch or a very good sense of rev's and timing.

I'm not saying the selectors are the problem but it's probably a good place to start looking for the source of the problem.

I prefer to work from the simple/cheap remedy end, rather than work backwards from the expensive end. emoticon

Re: Hard to Change 2-3?

Thanks DT,

No the synchros are fine.

The problem is intermittent and seems more prevalent when the clutch is warm. I agree RE it should be stiff in all gears but I don't see temperature affecting the gear shift nor that being an intermittent issue. Mind you, I haven't climbed under the bonnet to have a look at the linkage mechanism as yet either.

I am loathe to take it back to Nissan as our experiences with their service and warranty are dismal at both Penrith and Blacktown but we may have to.

There doesn't appear to be any clutch adjustment or I'd give that a shot just to see if it made any difference.

Cheers,
Rob

Is it still in warranty?

Have you previously reported it to a dealer, if so what was the result?

Even if the warranty has expired, if it was reported before expiry and it wasn't rectified/properly diagnosed, it should be covered.
