Ripped off...

Hi guys,

Starting to think buying the xtrail I got was the biggest mistake I've done car wise. After all the head gasket and gearbox issues, I get a call from Victoria Police today asking me questions about my xtrail. After confirming identities etc, the lady goes on to tell me the odometer has been wound down 100,000km+ and actually the car has done 279,720. Could not believe it, I'm a year 12 student spent my whole summer working to buy the car and get told this. The guy apparently did it to two other people. So a big lesson learnt and a lesson to everyone out there be very careful. She's coming over tomorrow to assess the car, but I'm pretty devastated. Someone reported it to crimestoppers as the car was listed before I bought it with 279,720km on manheim. The guy has now gone overseas and I can't get any compensation nor sell the car until the investigation is over and he comes back.
For a 17 nearly 18 year old a life lesson learnt but I just can't believe it happened. Anyway thankyou for looking,
Mitch.

Mitch, it is indeed depressing to think that unscrupulous morons still operate to rip off the unsuspecting at every opportunity.
I'm sure that all forum members sympathise with your predicament and hope that somehow eventually justice will prevail.
You have many years ahead of you and you will now be the wiser as you venture into your chosen career etc.

Re: Ripped off...

for future reference when buying a car do a REVs check/vehicle history check. this will tell you if the kms are genuine and if there is any money owing on the car and what accidents it has been in and if it has been recalled for any reason, how many owners, insurance details, if it has been stolen, if it has been written off and you get all this for $73.90. All you need is the VIN number to do it

Re: Ripped off...

Hey,

The detective came over on Tuesday night and said there was basically nothing I could have done to be aware of this. The guy bought the car a month before selling it to me, from interstate. Vicroads and Victorian Police don't have access to NRMA, etc data therefore it wouldn't of been picked until now(once all paperworks been processed) it's unfortunate we searched the car and found the old service book, the last service page in the book (rest ripped out) found the 160,000km service was done in 2008!!! 6 years ago and the car apparently has only done 10,000 since then... Anyway a lesson learnt..

Re: Ripped off...

The revs/car history report provides the info I stated on a national level. For example I got my xtrail in the NT but when I did the car history check through revs the report showed that the car spent most of its life in qld and that it had been recalled to have repairs fixed. it also showed me how many kms were on the car each year it was registered in qld and the nt. so although the car was purchased interstate the revs check would have shown you the info you needed. im not trying to make you feel bad or anything just for future reference $74 is a good price to pay to help you make an informed decision.
