Drew's T31 EXY

I picked up my first ever car on the 29th of November 2013.

A 2012 T31 ST 4x4 CVT Series 5 in Precision Grey.

Here it is, stock standard on the way home.

Image

Of course, I had to sleep in it the first night. It wasn't terribly comfortable, but I couldn't find the foam mattress lol.

Image

It didn't take long for me to start fiddling with it. The first mod was a couple of days later - getting the steering wheel lights hooked up. Mainly spurred on by driving it 2.5 hours home in the dark and not having a clue what button was what!

Then I started getting a few bits and pieces, such as a bonnet protector and weather shields.

Image

The next big project was installing a reversing camera. That was fun, but I got there in the end!
I got a CCD camera for the better image quality, but I forgot to check the size of the thing, and it's pretty massive! too big to fit under the tailgate garnish. So I stuck it down on the bumper. It will have to move one day when I get a towbar.

Image

Next I had to figure out where I wanted the screen. First I tried this interesting placement, but it was a pain to open every time I wanted to use it, and it kept falling off anyway lol. I eventually just sat it in the top slot of the dash, in the lower left of this pic.

Image

I also stumbled across a front-facing camera on ebay, and since my screen has 2 inputs, I got that as well. It's good to be able to check if there's anything right in front of you hidden by the bonnet, and damn useful for parking!

I bought a set of billet grille inserts from the X-Trail Shop, and installed them today.
I think they look amazing! plus they're practical, protecting the radiator.

Image
You can also see my front camera under the number plate, and my circular DRLs in the fog light holes.

Re: Drew's T31 X-Chariot

Cheers guys.

Max, not sure what I'll do next. Depends on funding mainly, lol. A nudge bar and towbar are definitely on the radar, and I'd like to get it lifted for some more ground clearance too. I've clobbered that stupid rear bumper a few times already.

I'll try and remember to get a night shot of the DRLs Jalal. I got the idea from the angel eyes thread. Got some 90mm 27LED rings, some translucent tubing, and a DRL relay on eBay and soldered it all up, only burning myself badly once in the process, lol. They're not quite as bright as some of the DRLs you see around, but they definitely catch the eye. Absolutely blinding at night without the relay.

Here's a couple of recent pics.

I tried to get the DRLs but it's far more difficult to do them justice in a photo than I imagined!

Here's a beach shot from QLD in winter.

You can see I've been exploring some muddy places, lol.

Re: Drew's T31 X-Chariot

Forgot to upload this one from a few weeks back.

Installing a set of bash plates from the Online X-Trail Shop. I got a very sore neck!

Image

In other news, my DRL ring on one side has had some moisture get in and kill a few of the LEDs emoticon
I'm currently formulating a plan for a new more weather proof set.

Re: Drew's T31 X-Chariot

The new DRLs are done!

Full force:
Image

Dimmed:
Image

The install in the fog light blank:
Image

I wanted to put these little eagle eye LEDs in each 'dimple' on the fog light blank, but soon realised that due to the convex shape of the blank, they would point outwards rather than straight ahead. So I basically cut a plywood disc to fit into the back of each plastic blank, and drilled into each dimple and through the ply as well to make a nice long straight hole to keep the LEDs pointing straight. Much easier said than done. Especially when you can't find where the jigsaw was still packed from moving!

I hooked them up to the existing relay which is set up to dim them at night, but even with this, they're incredibly bright at night. I think they're actually brighter than my low beam. I may have to change to a relay that switches them off completely at night.
I'll try and remember to get some photos of them in the dark tonight and get some other opinions.

(Please ignore the dirt, she needs a wash again :P)
