Outback trip 2013

Well, after 6 months, 1 computer crash, and a whole bunch of other trips - I've finally gotten around to uploading some pictures from the trip to Alice Springs and back.

To start with... this is my living room the day before leaving:
Image

And the final packing of the car:
Image

Image

Image

First stop was Parkes, NSW to stop at the CSIRO Parkes Observatory:
Image

Also visited Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo
Image

Image

Image

and a stop at Bogan Shire:
Image

before making camp at a road side stop before Bourke
Image

The next day, we hit the dirt roads about 20kms past Bourke
Image

Image

Bush camp on a clay pan
Image

Image

Image

The next day, on the way to Tibooburra, disaster strikes:
Image

Image
(Fyi - Yokohama came good and replaced the tyre under their Hazzard protection warranty - just a PITA carrying the tyre for 4 weeks)

Eventually, we hit the Dingo Fence at Cameron's corner:
Image

Image

After camping up at Cameron's for the night, we make our way through South Australia to Innamincka.
Image

Here, we camped and walked along the Cooper Creek and used the location as a base to visit the various historic sites in the area (Dig tree etc.)
Image

Image

Image

Image

Rob after enjoying is $2 shower:
Image

After 2 nights at Innamincka, we headed on through the Strezlecki desert to camp at Monte Collina Bore:
Image

Image

Image

Image

We were running pretty low on fuel by the time we got into Lyndhurst: we'd just covered 473km
Image

Image

Camping at Lyndhurst, Todd thankfully fixed my ArkPak 12v charger (i'm happy to say, i've finally got a proper dual battery isolator since). Not much to see at Lyndhurst, but we did stop at Talc Alf, Ochre Pits, and Farina Downs:

Made it Maree a bit after lunch:
Image

Image

Image

Image

and headed to Muloorina Station to our camp on the wetlands, and find Todd
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

obligatory flight over lake eyre
Image

Image

Image

Image

Road back to the camp site:
Image

and a walk on Lake eyre as well:
Image

Image

After a few days here, we headed along the Oodnadatta - where Rob in his BT-50 made a wrong turn that quickly got worse (sand was slipping)... was a tense 20 minutes!
Image

Image

But we persisted, and got to Blanche Cup
Image

A visit to the William Creek Pub:
Image

Image

Having some fun (and testing the bash plate) around Algebuckina Bridge:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Eventually we got in to Oodnadatta for a good feed
Image

Image

Played a bit on the 6x4 track:
Image

Image

Image

Regretfully, I didn't see a washed out creek, and broke an intercooler hose clip. Guess what I spent the afternoon doing:
Image

So i didn't leave to go to the pub till late that night:
Image

Regretfully, Neme had to fly home to Canberra for family reasons... so we skipped Mt Dare and that area, and went straight from Oodnadatta to Alice Springs so he could fly home.

We spent 4 nights in Alice and caught up with Todd who was staying at the camp ground across the road.

The 3 of us ended up going to Chambers Pillar and Rainbow Valley together (very long day):
Image

Image

Image

Image

Rob and I availed ourselves of the Big 4's pancake morning... many (free) pancakes were had emoticon
Image

and this was growing outside the toilet block
Image

We had a day trip out to the East McDonnell Ranges:
Image

Image

Image

Followed by a trip out to the West McDonnell Ranges, camping at Glen Helen Gorge resort:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

After that, we drove out to Palm Valley for the night:
Image

Image

We stayed at Kings Creek station, near Kings Canyon - loved the non-speed limited quads:
Image

Kings Canyon hike:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Price of diesel @ Kings Creek station. The Kings Canyon resort was $2.50/l from memory
Image

Of to Yulara/Ayres Rock/The Olgas... except this emu didn't want to let me back in the car:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

After a couple of days at Yulara to rest the bones, we headed out into the Painted Deserts to do some hikes:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

and saw these on the outskirts of Coober Pedy:
Image

Image

Accommodation in Coober Pedy
Image

Image

And then some sight seeing - look how happy Rob is, until he realises when we return to the car that he's locked his keys in the car!
Image

Image

Image

Image

After leaving Coober Pedy, we headed south to Woomera:
Image

Image

Image

and in 2 days flat, drove across from South Australia (Burra) to Hay (NSW) to Canberra

Re:

Yeah. I really want to get back out that way... still trying to find a spare week I can get out to Burra SA with the Mrs. Take the bikes along, as it looks like an awesome place to explore (old Copper mines)

I could get to Coober Pedy in 2.5 days, Yulara in 3.5 days quite easily, so it can be done in a 5 day work week + catching a long weekend at the beginning or end = 10 days. Regretfully, it'll have to wait until 2015, as we've burnt most of our leave on Bali (last week) and Europe in August/September/October.

Re:

Looks amazing.

Great planning beforehand allowed you to manage the mechanical inconveniences during trip.
Some of your driving days must have been looong.

Wonder how much extra fuel a petrol Exy would need to make it through.

Re:

Yeah. there were a few long days. You can see on the map, that we went straight from Coober Pedy to Burra, then Burra to Hay, then Hay to Canberra in 2.5 days. The Coober Pedy to Burra was a looong day, especially with the side trip to Woomera for lunch. We left Coober Pedy around 8am, and set the tents up in Burra in the dark..

Not sure how much fuel a petrol one would take, but even fully loaded with the bag on the roof and a couple hundred kg's of cargo, I was still using less than 10l/100km. And that was cruising at 120km/h in many places. Rob kept his fuel consumption down in the BT-50 by following the speed limits.
