Rear shocks/dampers

Hi All, looking for opinions here..... M9R with 250,000km on clock. The rear end seems to have gotten a life of it's own, has been getting worse over time, possibly a year. I always felt the exy felt very taut and well controlled no matter what I threw at it. But now it feels like the back end takes it's time about it. The higher the speed the more noticeable. Anything over 80kph, try a deliberate sudden swerve and it feels like I'm gonna lose it.
Shocks? Springs? Something else? I actually feel nervous driving on motorway, especially when there's a gusty crosswind as this makes it feel horrible too.
Most of the 250k has been motorway driving, though some folks would be of the opinion the local roads here in Westmeath, Ireland are more akin to off-road!!!.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks, George. Ireland.

Re: Rear shocks/dampers

Could be either or both springs and shocks. Shocks would be my first guess purely because they won't last as long as springs. When were they last changed?

Re: Rear shocks/dampers

if it has a light feeling in the back i would have to say shocks. if you push up and down on the back of the car a few times to get the car bouncing when you let go it should only go up and down by itself once or twice. if it keeps bouncing i would say most likely shocks. the side that bounces the most will be the worst side but change both anyways. if you areunsure get a mechanic to have a look.

good luck

Re: Rear shocks/dampers

I should have said in my original post that I'm still on the original shocks/springs etc all round.
The NCT (National Car Test) I had done about 4 weeks ago showed up just 6% imbalance between left and right on the rear shocks so that would indicate that if the problem is with the shocks then they have both just weakened over time. Another point, the ride height on the back is down by about 10mm from spec. Front is on spec.

George.

250,000km on the original shocks? That's a very impressive run. Very good chance that's your problem.

Re: Rear shocks/dampers

H All,

Went ahead and replaced with a Pedders shocks/struts and springs kit front and rear. Certainly sitting much higher than before though not at 695/705mm as Pedders quote. I'm getting 695 at rear both sides and 705 front left, 698 front right!

Didn't solve the problem with the rear end either. Still feels like I've got rear wheel steering (though someone else is doing the steering!). Had it in with main Nissan dealer this morning and although he can't find anything wrong, he suggests replacing the bushes on the trailing arms (where toe is adjusted) to 'see' if that helps! He just wants €200 plus parts to do it and can't say if that will solve the problem.

In relation to the front end, when I fitted the Pedders struts I fitted new strut top mounts i.e. the bearing, but reused the old top piece (the 'insulator'). The bearings I fitted are not genuine Nissan but another brand, SNR. Now I have a gentle 'groan' from the front end somewhere when I push down on either front wing. Disconnected the sway bar from struts and noise still there.

Unfortunately I don't have the pleasure of a lift so I'm working on the flat of my back for all this! Definitely not as young as I used to be!

Any and all suggestions welcome.
