Re: Problems starting and has cut out while driving

I am Now having the same problem after doing a filter change as pat of the service. I have spent some time looking over all the fittings but have found nothing out of place. Was wondering if there was a definitive answer for the stalling and trouble starting as im starting to second guess the filter connections.
Cheers

Re: Problems starting and has cut out while driving

Apart from checking all the connections I think you may have put some air in the fuel line. Use the squeeze bulb on the right side of the engine bay to see if you can get the air out.
I've said it many times...with such sophisticated engines there are far fewer things that backyard mechanics can do. Best leave such maintenance to the pros.
If the filter change was done by a mechanic then I'd be trooping the car straight back to them as all repairs are covered by a warranty period...usually a few months or more.

Air in the lines somewhere I'll bet. Most probably caught up in the pump.

Re: Problems starting and has cut out while driving

A question Buggs - when does it stall? Does it idle ok (say at lights) and then when you take off it stalls?

You need to check the air issue as others have suggested (really make sure the fuel connectors have seated in correctly). When the filter was changed hopefully they were scrupulous about cleanliness, because any grit/crap post filter goes directly into the high pressure fuel pump and then it is a significant issue.

If the HP pump seals are compromised in any way, engine will idle well, it will even hold freeway speeds ok, but will stall from starting off when the pressure in the common rail is not sufficient.

Also check around the HP pump lines - these are steel into the rail and there should be no weeping of diesel etc. You will need a good flashlight.

Re: Problems starting and has cut out while driving

Hi folks, has anyone got any more to add to this post. I have a similar, intermittent problem, with my 2008 Diesel. It seems to happen when the fuel tank is below one third. It can fail to start or worse lose power on the road with my A'van on the back. It is definitely fuel starvation. It seems that part of the time the injector pump has enough suction to pull the fuel up. An NRMA mechanic started it using petrol fumes through the air intake and once running the fuel supply was adequate.
Thanks
Kevin

Re: Problems starting and has cut out while driving

Hi Kevin and Buggs,
and apologies to all, this problem got solved (for me anyway) a couple of months ago. But between waiting for confirmation (a good amount of driving) and being away has meant I haven't posted on here.
The problem with my exy turned out to be the non genuine fuel filter that was put in. We changed it back to genuine on a hunch (as all other tests and enquiries showed nothing). And since changing back, there has been not one instance of struggling to start, or stopping while driving.
So check your filters, and if they don't have a Nissan sticker, try changing them out and see if that fixes it for you.

Cheers,
Tony.

Re:

Aha.

Yep - sometimes it doesn't pay to fit non-genuine parts in such a finely tuned engine.

I'll put my money on bad fuel and not the fuel filter.

I had similar performance issues with my ute recently. Crap diesel from Woolworths was the real cause. The fuel filter was clogged.

It may surprise many of you, but the RYCO fuel filter for my ute offers better filtration than the genuine filter (RYCO 10micron vs genuine 15micron)

The ute was starved of fuel only 2000km after a service where the fuel filter was replaced.

Once the filter was changed again, the problem went away, albeit for a short time, then returned. The Fuel filter was replaced for a third time in 5000km and problem went away.

Of course Woolworths didn't want to know about it, (even with a fully verifiable Rewards Card fuel purchase history from the same Woolworths fuel site for over 12mths leading upto the problems)

FYI, Woolworths fuel is only filtered to 40microns, but most modern fuel filters will filter down to either 10 or 15microns, which means that your fuel filter captures a lot of crap that Woolworths lets through the bowser EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE WEEK!!

Re:

I don't know if you're still trying to fix this problem Tony, but another possible avenue of faultfinding you might want to look at is the Mas Airflow Sensor (MAF). It sits in the air box prior to the turbocharger.

The symptoms of being hard to start and cutting out while driving are both symptoms of a dirty or malfunctioning MAF sensor.

Might be worth a look. I recently had mine cleaned at 70,000kmand it was filthy. It has definitely made a difference.
