Won't start with ac on?

Hey guys,

Just bought an 09 t31 turbo diesel, loving it however got an weird problem;

If the ac is switched to any fan speed but 0 it won't start, it turns over but nothing until I switch it back to 0?

Got stranded for hours before I found out about this, mechanic can't explain it

Has anyone else had this?

Re: Won't start with ac on?

This is an interesting find...but not totally unheard of. I've had petrol engined cars in the past that struggled to start with the AC on as it seemed to overload the starter motor.

In your case, I think that may be the problem - the starter motor might be weak.

For what it's worth, I can start my 2011 TL with the AC on but I choose not to.

I was always taught that it was a bad idea to start a car with the AC on anyway and have always been in the habit of shutting the AC down before switching off...sort of a 'mental shutdown checklist' I adhere to each time : Lights: Off, windows: closed, Sunroof cover: Shut, AC: off, fan: off, engine: shutdown.

Re:

Is this a fault or is every Xy like this.
I used to do what Mark did as well, turn everything off before the ignition. Only the radio used to stay on.
Could be a resistor issue.

Re:

Certainly not every X-Trail Tony. In summer I start ours with the air-con fan speed set to full blast and it starts without any problems. I used to do that with the T30 as well and it was fine and didn't affect the battery life either.
