Diesel Noise

Hey All,

So I've been living with the exy for a while now and gotten used to the clatter but after having lived with a pajero diesel for the past week as a hire car,I've gotten used to a smoother sounding diesel and now that I am back in the exy I want to turn my attention to making the exy sound just a little bit smoother.

I am not doing this for performance merely for acoustics. One thing that I do not want is big booming or droning exhuast (been there in my 20's). I could bang on about this but you get the message.

Any recommendations are welcomed

Cheers
B

Re: Diesel Noise

Only option would be to insulated the cabin better. Would be a mammoth task. Ian has done some insulation work to his but I dare say the front end (which he didn't do) would be the most difficult.

Re:

Geez tony tell it how it is... I get its never going to be something that its not. I actually like the performance of the engine, its just that clatter.... I know the clatter comes from the engine compression but I was wondering if someone in the forum did something that effectively reduced it through a mod.

I wasn't sure to put the original post in tuning or in the diesel section because of my last point.

I had thought of the insulation path... If nothing comes out of this thread I've got this as no.1 mod to try out.

Anyways always interested to hear thoughts.

Re:

As Todd said, sound insulation is your only option, the other option won't be a legal one and while it will reduce the sound it won't make your diesel a road worthy car......DPF out!

I don't think you'd wanna consider that at all.

Re:

The "clatter" of the M9R is characteristic of the M9R engine. Any vehicle fitted with the engine has the same characteristic sound - whether it is the diesel XTrail, the Renault Koleos, Renault Laguna or the Renault Traffic Van. All of them sound much the same.
You have to understand that in the M9R engine, Renault employed some revolutionary technology to make it one of the most green and efficient engines of its class.
There is nothing you can do with the M9R clatter except get used to it. Frankly, I don't notice it any more and it has never worried me anyway.

Sorry mate but that's the only way really to say it.
You could go down the insulation path mentioned above but it's a lot of time and money for something you won't get rid of.

Re: diesel noise

For last 23 years I drove on diesels to the Moon and back and again to the Moon distance and never even thought or worried about diesel engines clatter excessively.
Moreover, pleasant diesel noise means power for me.
As for additional acoustic insulation - seems as waste of time and money. And what about windscreen insulation?

Re: Diesel Noise

Some people say running a little bit of 2-stroke oil in diesel fuel will make it run quieter. Personally I wouldn't do it with the X-Trail because of the EGR, DPF etc. Google it and make your own decision.
