HELP!!? 2002 xtrail TI keeps cutting out...

Hi guys, hope you guys can help. When the engine is cold after approx a 1km or so it just cuts out. I have changed the crank and cam sensor, I've reset the ecu and cleaned the air intake sensor (mfu or whatever it's called) but to no avail. I'm thinking perhaps the fuel filter but been told its supposedly for vehicle life?
Has anyone got any more ideas, really don't want to send it to Nissan, I've checked for any codes and non appear, at a loss now....please help!

Re:

If you have already changed the 3 sensors in questions (Cam, Crank and O2), it is time to definitely change the fuel filter as it must be changed at 100,000kms mark and it not there for life.

Do a forum search for "Fuel Filter" and you will find the part number for the Nissan one which only cost about $26 bucks or so.

Re:

When it cuts out are there any other signs?

What temperature does it reach (is it always cold)

does it cut out during idling or acceleration, or both?

does it feel sluggish when it starts up or any starting trouble?

Any check engine lights come on when it happens?

Any particular rev band it does it in (e.g. does it drop to <5-600 then die?)

Could also try out the IAVL procedure, there is a DIY guide on it, i suggest a good stopwatch or one on a phone to make it easier as you have to be pretty exact to invoke it.

Re: Re:

Hi DJ,

Ok, temps are normally always cold to half warm. When its hot it never does it. What normally happens is, at the bottom of our road there is a right hand turn into quite a steep hill. When you accelerate hard up the hill and then shut off as you get to the flat the revs drop as normal then just cuts out. So tried it going up the hill slowly and not that high revs but then same occurs. It's not every time either. It sometimes happens on the way to a friends house which is a bit further and on a hill. The hill thing seems to the common denominator. I thought perhaps the tank was sucking in air cus of the incline/decline but even with the tank full it happens.
It starts normal when cold and even after it fails. No power drops before or after. No lights come on apart from the usuals.
What's the IAVL procedure??

Re: HELP!!? 2002 xtrail TI keeps cutting out...

emoticon Hi Phil, and welcome to the forum, sorry to hear your having problems, try Ultratune if your not happy with your local dealer, but remember they deal with a lot more X Trails than anyone else, so maybe try a different dealer if your not satisfied with your local dealer.

Anyhow if your looking for answers you've come to the right place, you'll get your answer quick smart I'm sure. But it sounds like something you need to deal with straight away.

One more thing to try, your exy could be getting a vapor lock in the tanks. If you use any cap other than the original one it can cause this to happen. so try using one of the plastic orange temporary caps for a few days, it may help, it may not, but at least you'll have eliminated one more issue.

Chasing issues by replacing parts can be expensive mate, so a trip to a mechanic may save you in the long run. Dads been there done that!

Well I'm off to get Muddy tomorrow, Dads taking me out so he can photograph some wedge tailed eagles at a nest site, I love the track in and out, lots of glorious mud to play in, Ye ha! emoticon Have a great day, tread lightly, and I hope your exy gets well soon, Augustus the X Trail emoticon

Re:

Ok guys. bit of an update.

Haven't yet changed the fuel filter as local Nissan were very reluctant to sell me one, not sure why as its money for them and no comebacks. However, after taking the airbox out and checking the wires, all of which looked fine, removed the earth cables cleaned & put back on, I did notice the throttle housing (one with butterfly valve in) look pretty dirty, so cleaned all inside that then rebuilt.

Its been a week now and hasnt cut out, but, the revs drop to about 500rpmwhen driving while its warming up. Could it be a fuel issue?. Does anyone have any ideas as to what would be making the revs drop that low, if you have some ideas I will hopefully pinpoint the problem & get it running how it should.

Thanks guys.

Re:

You're going to hate my suggestion, but sometimes worrying about such problems just ages you quicker and after many years of DIY, I have now resorted to using the dealer.
Yes it might cost a little, but the repair comes with a warranty and you don't have to needlessly replace item after item trying to fix the problem.
Give a dealer a go at it - you might be pleasantly surprised at the result and it will save you having to worry about the problem ever again. Contrary to popular belief they aren't always out to rip you off.

Now that you have cleaned the throttle body, you should do an idle air relearn as the butterfly position might have changed and could be returning too far when on cold idle causing the slight stutter.

Re: Re:

Thanks exy, I did speak to the local dealer and they reeled off a number of possible reasons, and after quotes of between 2-3k ie catalyst, alternator incorrectly fitted cam sensors I just thought bollox to them.

Thanks also to revhead kev, will try it this wknd.
