T31 factory fitted roof racks, fitting a Thule 591 bike carrier - T-Track?

I've just picked up the bike carrier today and came to fit it. I found that the little brackets they fit to wrap the roof bars are slightly too short, and thought I was stuffed, and would need to get an adapter kit. I then found in this thread:

http://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/t128491

that my bars are most likely Thule anyway, as Nissan don't manufacture bars. I then decided to look a little harder, and realised that if I pulled out the black rubber strip, my bars actually support the "T-Track" fitting arrangement. I had another go at fitting them, and then I found that the T-Track on the front bar is slightly smaller than that on the back. The mounting bolts for the back fit perfectly into the T-Track, but the T-Track on the front bar is very slightly smaller. It almost appears that they've fitted the wrong bar onto the front as I'd expect the t-tracks to be the same width - either that or Thule don't provide appropriate fixtures with the bike carrier.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Any ideas as to how I can get it to fit? Do I need to by different T-Track fittings for the front bars?

Not sure why you're having issues - I have a T31 with the Nissan genuine roof bars and the 591 bike rack. All fits perfectly fine - you have to take the rubber black strips out to slot the square-ended 'bolts' in. Perhaps you need to look at the manuals again?

Not sure how I could be clearer - I said that I pulled the black strip out and found that i could fit the t bolts into the back bar, but not the front, as the front appears to be slightly narrower. I tried all 3 t bolts, in both directions, and no bolt would fit into the T-track - as it's too small...

I'll measure the t-track section on the front and back tonight and see where the difference is coming in.

Thanks for the suggestion of checking the manual though.

Go to eBay and type in Thule T-Bolt and you will get what you're looking for.

Re:

Just to clarify, I've taken some photos of the t-track with a ruler in shot to give some relative size. Here's the back:

And here's the front:

While the measurements aren't too relevant due to issues with the angle, the distance between the two bits of black plastic on the outside is the same for the front and back track. You'll note that there is a reasonable gap at either side of the front track, while there is no gap for the back track. Am still trying to track down a smaller t-bolt. Will try a roofrack superstore this weekend...

Re:

I am not sure if the distance between the black plastic bits of the roof rail has anything to do with the size of the bolt, as you are mandated by the inner width of the aluminium channel which in your case looks completely different between the rear one (with a groove in the middle) and the front one which is flat. You would need to measure the inner width of the aluminium channel itself to see which size T-bolt would fit it correctly. A quick call to Thule Australia could save the headache if you haven't already done so.

Rhino rack make fitting kits for other brands of roof racks. I picked up a Rhino branded rola t bolt fitting kit that fits my T30 rola roof racks from auto one for $22. Perhaps they make a Thule kit too. Worth a look at least.

Just spoke with Thule Australia and the guy I spoke with said that he doesn't think they've supplied Nissan for quite a few years. I told him that everyone here is saying that the T31 has Thule bars, but he didn't agree. Not sure if he knew what he was talking about - wasn't terribly helpful. He did say though that they do sell a T bolt that is slightly narrower. Will just try a roofrack superstore on the weekend

Turns out Nissan screwed me over, and fitted one old style bar (with the narrow t-track) and one new style bar. And apparently they're Rola bars. Even though it's a T31...

Was able to get a pack of smaller headed bolts to fit the two for an extra $20. Fortunately the rack was already about $25 off RRP...
