I found the source! For those of you unfamiliar with the underside of the xtrail, this is the exhaust bend just under the engine, where it directs towards the rear of the car (in front of the catalytic converter). As you can see in the photo there are two heat shields/guards (top & bottom) which look perfectly normal and sitting exactly where they belong, but much clearer in the second photo is the fact that I can lift the top one away from the exhaust... turns out I must've cracked the small spot-welds that fix the shield to the exhaust. So that explains the horrible noise! Fixed it myself in the spot. No annoying noise has beat me yet >:]nondisclosed_email@example.com (Ian Ewin)Wed, 24 Jul 2013 12:14:23 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2076262,from=rss#post2076262https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2076262,from=rss#post2076262Must be a big stone Ian if you can hear it with all that deadener in the car.nondisclosed_email@example.com (cooch t31)Wed, 24 Jul 2013 05:57:59 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2076258,from=rss#post2076258https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2076258,from=rss#post2076258Hi Bryce, The problem with these sorts of rattles is that sound can travel quite easily. See if they can pin down exactly where they found it. If the rock managed to get in, then it must be able to get out the same way...it may be a tricky case of trying to find the ingress point though.nondisclosed_email@example.com (mfeodoroff)Tue, 23 Jul 2013 19:51:28 +0000 Re: Rattle before service, rattle after service. I apologise for the yelling.. but damn, it is THE most irritating noise. I plan on getting under the car at some point this week and will let you know how I go and if it's in the same location, etc. I hate irregular noises in my car nondisclosed_email@example.com (Ian Ewin)Tue, 23 Jul 2013 18:57:32 +0000 Re: Rattle before service, rattle after service. He said that there the rock is in a rail the passenger side. Basically the rattle sounds like it is directly under the front passenger seat. I've had look under the car and I think I can see where he is talking about - and there are 2 small drain holes. However I have no ramps or anything so am unable to get underneath the car to have a play nondisclosed_email@example.com (bryce88)Tue, 23 Jul 2013 13:33:43 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2076221,from=rss#post2076221https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2076221,from=rss#post2076221I had the same thing Bryce. Perseverance is probably all you need (unless you happen to have a service camera) Do you know exactly where the rock is? Mine was in the rear left suspension arm. All I had to do (once I found it) was to gradually move it up the arm to a higher point, and then pop it out (the arm is 'u' shaped higher up, but enclosed down towards the wheel. With luck, your stones will eventually drop in the general course of nature and random vibration, although the rattle will annoy the daylights out of you until they do.  To speed that process you may otherwise prefer to try to hook them out with a length of bent wire. nondisclosed_email@example.com (DogTrail)Sun, 21 Jul 2013 20:11:36 +0000 Rattle before service, rattle after service. Basically every time I turned, started and stopped something would roll around under the car and the sound echoed through the whole car. It was due for a service anyway so booked it in and advised the mechanics of the rattle. The mechanics managed to find the problem, a rock managed to lodge itself inside a hollow rail under the car through a drain hole however they couldn't get the rock out. So my question is what do I do now? Turn the music up louder to drown out the rattle? The mechanic says that maybe the rock will fall back out the same drain hole however I'm not as optimistic. nondisclosed_email@example.com (bryce88)Sun, 21 Jul 2013 19:59:53 +0000
