I'd be guessing at a sensor, presuming you'be been given the injectors a regular clean. I use Nulon Total Fuel System Cleaner every 5,000kms to clean the system. At the moment its at $25 (less 20% until July 31 for RACQ/NRMA/etc members) at Repco and $23.50 at Supercheap.

Cheers,

If you are into that stuff Caltex Techron 5000 (not the 1000) is a bit cheaper, usually around $15 or $16 at Caltex servos. The Techron 5000 has the PEA that's meant to act as the total system cleaner. Best used if the car does lots of short trips as it has a chance to work after the car is off and a bit of fuel spray sticks around

Personally I think it's all hogwash and if the injectors are really needing a clean they should be professionally removed and replaced or cleaned out and their spray patterns checked. It'd be pretty noticeable if injectors were failing.

If you fill with 98 you don't have to waste more money on injector cleaners as they have additives.

Re: Re:

I don't want to rub salt into the wound but the last tankfull of Caltex 98 returned 8.07 L/100 Km in the 2.5L 4x4.

That was the last fortnight's worth of around town and suburban level driving over about 700 KM on that tank.

Hills do abuse fuel consumption and I don't live on one so that really helps my economy.

Tyres can also make a noticeable difference to economy, but if you live in a hilly area, then that is most likely to be the main culprit if the sensors etc are all OK.

You must be driving no more than 60kms/hour and not exceeding 2,500RPM to achieve such a good fuel economy, as it's impossible to achieve such a result with a petrol T31 driving "freely" emoticon

Yeah, maybe with a diesel, but I also have trouble grasping those figures for petrol. Even if I drove like an old lady, I was still always impressed when my stock T31 used to get 9 something litres per 100km(usually only on the highway).

Re: Re:

I rarely exceed 2500 RPM but I like to sit on the GPS limit for the area - which is usually 5 KPH higher than the speedo.

At the lights, I 'm usually first off the mark - I drop the toe to the usual 60 kph setting and let the CVT work it out from there. It usually beats the other cars - unless there is one bloke in a real hurry.

At 80 Kph (which covers most of my District), the tacho usually shows about 15-1600 rpm on level ground.

At 70 Kph, the fuel usage indicator sits at about 4 l/100 on level ground.

100 Kph is still below 2000 rpm.

110 Kph , barely over 2000 rpm.

She only gets any excitement on manual tip-touch runs of the manual version of CVT on exhilarating hill climbs. Then 4000 rpm is a good torque spot.

Probably sucks in the fuel at 20+ L/100 Km at that time but it is still part of the overall average.

However, as you say, she rarely exceeds 2500 rpm, although she does prefer to lope along a bit faster than 60 kph where possible.

I have discovered that the sweet spot for this car is 78 Kph by GPS for optimum efficiency.

(That would be the outside edge of the 8"0" for those without GPS and with the same gearing and Dunlop SP20 tyres at 38 psi front and 36 psi rear)

Yeah mate, I can't drive like that as I would feel like am walking along the car rather than driving it emoticon

I know it is hitting my hip pocket with the fuel economy and am not complaining, but I would much rather drive the car without having to watch the fuel bar consumption indicator 24x7

Re: Re:

Driving a responsive car is fun, so do it for enjoyment - not economy.

I get both as the 'surge' of power is optional.

Usually unnecessary but there if I want it.

The key to getting the best economy from the 2.5L X-trail is probably the same key as getting the best from every car.

( and gaining the trust of wild animals )

"No sudden movements".

As well as alerting those who would be best left resting: e.g. (Good evening Sir, do you know what speed you were doing? Have you had a drink tonight?), sudden movements are anathema to smooth driving and can scare the horses emoticon

Smooth drivers have an edge.

Edit: the only difference I am aware of between my car and every other Xtrail beside its unusual fuel economy is my addition of a home-made contoured step at the rear and radiator fill-in screens at the front.

That may have changed the normal/previous airflow over the vehicle.

I know the step changed the overall airflow by watching the dust when on a dirt road. The dust now lays low rather than the previous billow immediately behind the car.

Perhaps the changed wind resistance / air flow from my step and/or the change in its radiator screen air flow gives this car its unusual (up to 40% better than average) fuel economy?

Dunno, but the dog likes the added step.

Have you actually crunched the figures after refueling or are you solely going of the trip computer?

Re:

I imagine driving around the sunny coast is a very different story to mine in peak hour Brisbane emoticon
Max speed: 60k/hr. Av Speed less than half of that. We have seen figures down around 8l/100kms with pure highway driving (flat area) averaging around 90-100kms/hr, but hilly areas around lismore push it back up into the 9s.
