Lidsdale State Forest

Just a few photos from this weekend's 4WD training with John Cantrell up at Lidsdale State Forest

The beginning:
John in his Jeep Wrangler, us, and James/Kate in the Hilux... with our first obstacle in the background

Some nice little ruts

Steep descent
[youtube =0QIttiEt1NI]

And a bit of a climb. Shame I didn't leave enough room, as I would have made it up with no problem...except John was pottering up in LR... and I needed to keep momentum.

Cox's river crossing (and back)

Disaster strikes on this uphill

and i'm changing a tyre (and yes - that tyre was less than 6 days old!!!)

Nice phat tyre wall cut

Undeterred, and thankful I had bought a full size GO12 spare earlier that week, continued onto the next descent...

This was a bit steeper and rocker than i imagined... thankfully with John directing, no part of the car touched (although the brakes were screaming for mercy)

and the hilux following us down

With a few more steep and loose rock climbs,

the day finished on a recovery equipment session near the Rydal Pub...

Highly recommend the Rydal pub as good, clean accommodation... for $55/night was great (we stayed the night before, as we did the 4 hour drive from Canberra after work).

I recognise a lot of those tracks Michael. Great area Mt Walker. Really good fun in an X-Trail. Glad you went for the Yokos now hey. Free replacement tyre coming your way emoticon

How come you didn't try the track to the left as you came out of Cox's River crossing Micheal ? emoticon

What were the main things you learnt from the course and what was John's opinion of the Xtrail after the day ?

Kev,
He already knows about the X Trail as he has seen mine in action.
He lives across the road from me.

Re:

I learned to leave a big gap between a LR'd 4WD when climbing.

But good stuff about wheel placement and crossing ruts etc. And the Cox's River crossing was good.

Didn't want to stuff around with the other exit, and just went up the right hand track (although it was corrugated a fair bit).

I mainly wanted some more knowledge on recoveries, which we covered in the afternoon.

Where did you enter the SF Michael? I think I recognise pretty much all the tracks in your videos except the first one and where you are parked at the start of the day.
