Re:
That's a damn fine job, mate. Very neat and factory-looking; personally, my only modification would be to have it mounted a little lower to avoid any flexing/vibration issues with the bracket, but I'm guessing that was the standard size Z bracket it came with? Looks great none the less!

Re: Antennas
Whilst you do want good range from your antenna, you must remember that the more gain you get, the further away you will receive radio traffic from. (There are plenty of idiots on UHF these days, so listening to somebody's crap from 50km away will be quite annoying)
5-10 km or so car to car on simplex all most people need.
I've had the RFI glass mount UHF antenna (AP454) on lots of work vehicles as well as on a private vehicle for 6 yrs. They all have worked fine, giving good range on simplex and I've never came off either.
The tip of the antenna just needs to be above the roof line once installed, for consistent 360deg performance.
The most common cause of glass mount antennas coming off is poor site preparation. I've seen the installers doing work vehicles and all they do is give the site a good rub with a rag dipped in methylated spirit and allow 2-3mins drying time to get good adhesion.
For those interested, manufacturer's link to the antenna I'm referring to is below.
http://www.rfiwireless.com.au/mobile-antennas/uhf-mobile/uhf-glass-mount/uhf-glass-mount-ap454-71-5g.html
If you get one of these it must be tuned at the black box with a swr meter (easily done by any radio tech & takes about 5 mins) as glass thicknesses vary.

Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation
What is the length of your antenna ?
Just wondering if the height above the roofline will give you troubles with tree branches across tracks hitting it and putting extra stress on the mounting or antenna with possible breakage.

Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation
Interesting point Kev, here in Kent they can bloody low. I had a branch take out a gutter mount on my XJ
I was slightly concerned that the mounting point would have to take the occasional thwack so I built the bracket to use both bolt holes. Picture taken while fitting.
I have used a number of different types in the past, I am considering a short range unit such as Thunderpole's Solarcon small antenna. OK so it is no "bush" antenna but then I have sitting in the rack a Thunderpole Trucker SS. Both of these are suitable for off road use.
However if I am feeling really brave I have a Modulator which looks like the Voyager. It is a very good rod and whippy apart from the base coil, but no good with trees though.
The Solarcon gives about a 3 mile range, the Trucker 5 miles and the Modulator over 10, and I have got a lot further in the right location, FM CB being ground wave.
So I have choice, as yet I am undecided but may go with the Trucker, I have a black version of it too ....any thoughts ?
