OBD2 Scanner

Hi
I want to get an OBD 2 scanner unit suitable for use with the diesel M9R.
Ideally it would also be a data logger.
Any recomendations?
I see quiet a few online are specified for the petrol.

Please list any you know work.
Thanks
David

Re: OBD2 Scanner

Hi jalaski

I have searched and read widely and noted that many scanners only give codes, not the Nissan meanings and many of the cheaper scanners only list petrol models not the diesel. Others are reported not to work with the later model diesels.

I had the check engine light come on when we were out bush last weekend. Cut the trip short and drove back to town without getting the fault code. Nearly five hours at about 70kph as the book suggests. Later a couple of short runns after returning check engine light has reset..

So I would like suggestions from people who use them of a scanner that works with the Diesel M9R Nissan engine.
Ideally I would like a scanner that also logs data.
Suggestions please, or links.
Thanks
David
Regards

Re: OBD2 Scanner

If the scanner you are after is the one used by Nissan dealers (called Consult III) expect to pay over $12,000 for it.

Otherwise and for the sake of finding the error code as a result of a check engine light, please refer to DIY Guides section of the forum for a method that would enable you to count flashes in the dash to de-code the error code you are getting. This can be done without any scanners.

Re: OBD2 Scanner

Hi Jalal

I have tried this method repeatedly on my diesel and used a stopwatch etc and cannot get into the diagnostic mode. I have given up on it.

I think David's request is a reasonable one given that there are a plethora of OBD2 readers on the market -finding one that works on Nissan vehicles seems to be trial and error.

I looked at this recently to try to decode a hard MIL error & had to pay the dealer $80 for the privilege of telling me it was the EGR valve. That's a story for another thread.

Cheers

Re:

I used my Scanguage II that normally sits in the Navara to try and read the codes when the MIL light came on in Phillipa's car. No codes were read and I tried the reset sequence several times with an increasing level each time. When I checked the volts reading on the Scangauge it showed 11.2V which I knew indicated a battery problem but when I topped up the cells I was able to get the battery back to 13.8V. Still couldn't reset the light but Phillipa tells me it went out the following day on her way to work....
