Trip to Albany in the new X-Trail

G'day all,

Thought I'd share my first trip into Albany WA with the X-trail.

Headed down Saturday morning and took roughly four and a half hours from Perth. Unbelievable drive and very impressed with the handling of the car etc.

It handled beautiful on the gravel tracks, Liz and I were very keen to try it on the sand. The bloke at the bait shop pointed out a great few beaches with hard sand so off we head.

Lower tyre pressures down to 18psi and we hit the sand. About 200m in it starts to becomes very very soft and the car starts to fish tail a touch, so I try and get out of the ruts I'm in and make a wide turn but too late-bogged. We got out, dug out the car, used the Maxi trax and off we go again. Another 100m down the beach, bogged, but right up to the axle. Dug as much as we could out from under the car but still no luck. Put the tyres down a touch more, still no luck-absolutely stuck.

Luckily there were quite a few people on the beach and a Father/son team offered a push and when that didn't work happily snatched us out and towed us to the next track.

I will testify that the front ''recovery point'' worked an absolute treat with an 8,000Kg strap and the x-trail would drive on the hard sand all day long with no issues.

Sorry about not having photos but next trip I'll be sure to snap some.

(first experience being bogged but you can only learn so much from reading rather than doing)

Cheers!

Re: Trip to Albany in the new X-Trail

Hi Mike,
Although bogged twice you will have gained some valuable sand driving experience.
Did you have ESP in "OFF" position. You don't want wheels locking up on sand.
I attempted a steep sand dune on Stockton beach a while back and after two attempts I lowered tyre pressure. Originally lowered to 16psi for the start of the beach trip but found when I went to lower again the heat had built the pressure up to 19psi. I went down to 15psi all round according to the ARB deflator gauge and then sailed up the dune without any problems at all.

So, SAND DRIVING............ESP "OFF", suitable lower tyre pressure and keep up momentum on the soft stuff.

cheers
p.s. of course t goes without saying that having your own suitable recovery gear is a must

Hi Dave-

It is amazing the wealth of knowledge and experience you can gain by getting in a bad situation.

The ESP was off the entire time. I found I had the same thing with the tyre pressures however by the time I had realized the sand was right up to the axle so lowering it further would have put me in more strife.

I'm glad I made the investment into compressor, deflators, gauge, maxtrax and decent snatch straps/shackles etc.

I need to invest in a tow bar mainly for the purpose of a recovery point- the only way out was forward into some softer stuff before the hard stuff again (due to me not wanting to use the rear tie down point)-going backwards would have definitely been better.

In relation to the Pedders lift you've listed, how much extra clearance are you getting now? Would you recommend it, and the tyres you've listed, do they add to the off roading abilities?

Cheers!!

Re:

The lift helped me out big time Esperance going through some bog holes. Without the lift, I would been stuck out there for days. Check out the suspension, placement tyres and oversized tyres threads for more info. I just upgraded/oversized my tyres to the Yokos too. This long weekend camping trip would be a fantastic test to see how they go.

Re: Trip to Albany in the new X-Trail

The lift and the bash plates sure helped out on my Fraser Island trip. Had the OEM Dunlop tyres then but they were quite OK for sand. As well as the 35mm spring lift I now have the larger diameter A/T tyres which add an extra 6mm lift when fully inflated.
The A/T tyres have proved invaluable on the slippery muddy stuff, as has the bash plates on those often very rough bush tracks.

cheers again
