Fraser Island

Hi Guys,

i've done a few searchs amongst the forums re X-Trails on fraser island. i've come across a little snippet here and a bit there.

I love Fraser Island and usually go every year in my Brothers Prado however this year i have my XTrail and would be itnerested in knowing how people thought there X-Trail handled the in-land tracks mostly (especially after those tour buses have been through some of them).

Any information you guys can give would be wonderful! emoticon

Fraser Island

Hi all,

Thought this was the best thread for asking advice from anyone who has recently been to Fraser Island.

I think I've read every Fraser Island thread on the site, however the most recent I could find was 2013 so I'm wondering if anyone has any more recent info.. I'm planning on heading up there in early August, with a mate who has a Ford Ranger, and am wondering if anyone has been to Fraser recently (especially in their Exy) and what the conditions were like. I've done limited sand driving and am a little concerned about my exys ability on Fraser, especially on some of the inside tracks and beach access tracks.

I'm running 225/70/16 Yokohama Geos and have a pedders lift (approx 30mm) and my mate will have a full recovery kit. Am in 2 minds about whether I should invest in Max Tracks (or similar) as have read differing opinions about their success, especially on some of the QLD sand islands.

Any advice or feedback would be most welcome.

Allan

Nothing ventured nothing gained.

What is this obsession with safety?

I took a bog standard 1800cc Subaru wagon with road tyres through there a good few years ago. Not without "events" but they were minor and we got there.

Pick the line and put your trust in the car , your ability and your Deity. ('emoticon');

Re: Fraser Island

Maxtrax should be the first item in your recovery kit. I carry them in my T30 as I do a LOT of beach driving in Broome. They have saved me a few times. You have heard people having varied success? I don't think the sand in Qld is any different from the soft sand in Broome. Maybe they are using them wrong emoticon

Re: fraser island

G'day Allan,

How did you and the Exxy go on Fraser?

I actually went there for the first time my Exxy last week (9-12 August) and I was surprised how easily I got through the trip (I have the lift and bigger tyres also). I was very nervous prior to doing the trip. I didn't do a lot of inland driving, but easily made it through inskip point, on and off the barge, through Indian head and inland from Eurong to Lake McKenzie and back.

I think a lot of it comes down to knowing how to drive the x-trail on sand and not being too tentative when driving through the soft entrance and exit points. The sand at Inskip point was really soft getting off the barge coming home and there were two cars stuck on both sides of the access point, but I just kept the revs up and momentum, kept it 4wd lock mode and was able to get through fine. My only worrying moment was changing from 2nd back to 1st gear as I could feel the car start to slow immediately, but put the foot back on the accelerator and was fine.

As mentioned by most people, I had plenty of my own recovery gear to get out in case I did get stuck. Better to plan for the unexpected.
