Re: DPFs
That is an interesting article, and those with manual diesels might particularly need to note the bit it mentions about those with a high 6th gear. If you do a lot of driving in 6th with the engine below 1500RPM I'd suggest you are looking for DPF trouble because it's not high enough RPM for the DPF to regenerate.
I'd be very interested to see statistics on how many manual TS and TL owners have had DPF troubles versus those with automatic transmissions. In the auto, 6th gear doesn't engage until the car reaches 110+ kmh and as a result I find the engine tends to hover around 1700-2200RPM on most freeways.
I try to keep my engine RPM above 1500 as much as possible to give the DPF regen process a chance to occur. In the TL, you can tell when the DPF regen is in progress because your fuel consumption shows a brief increase.
I think also that if you tend to be a bit of a leadfoot driver then that will increase your risk of DPF problems because it will soot up more quickly.

Re:
So for those that were following my posts in the other thread I have some news.
I spoke to the dealership today. The main person whom I was liasing with went on holidays just before the DPF light came on, and she only started back today. She is very helpful.
She believes that Nissan Australia saying that there is something wrong with the aftermarket DPF is bollocks (as do I). She reported the problem through to the company that she ordered the DPF from. They have asked a whole bunch of questions (some of which were asked on here eg: pre and post exhaust temps etc) and the plan is for the dealership to provide a report back to the aftermarket DPF.
The company will then analyise the report and forward it to the company in europe who actually manufacter the DPF. The interesting point though is that this company in europe, manufacters DPF's for most vehicle companies, so they are gobsmacked that something is allegedly wrong with their DPF.
So, its not going to be a quick fix, it is going to take time. I do have a loan vehicle, but its not the same (especially the $2,750 excess).
They have said that if we do go down the path of getting the Nissan Genuine DPF, whilst she agrees that I would be liable for the cost of the new part, the amount will only be for cost price, so the price that the dealership gets it. I guess thats better than nothing...
I guess all I can do now is hurry up and wait... .

Re: Re:
Griz - I wonder if they simply binned the original DPF. From a few reports these can even be high pressure cleaned - be interesting to pull it apart and see how much it has clogged up with ash.
Mark - I was the first in WA to get the diesel back in 2008 and I haven't had any DPF related issues (said crossing fingers & toes) - I put this down to leaving the manual in 5th on the freeway at 100, ensuring that most runs take in a minimum 10 min greater than 2,000rpm cycle and sticking with both BP Ultimate and Shell Helix low ash oil.

Re:
Here is what I hope to be the final update.
So I got Exy back today. What was the problem you ask?
When they replaced the DPF, they contaminated one of the sensors, which, was causing a blockage on the sensor and was not providing correct data back to the ECU.
Because the sensors were only recently replaced, they were still under parts warranty so they replaced the contaminated sensors and presto, no DPF light.

Re:
Hi Nick,
According to THIS website it is indeed DPF related and means the following:
quote:
A particle filter symbol. It may appear with an exclamation point in it indicating a failure of the system or that engine emissions are too high. Contact your dealer in order to properly address any failures.
