Not having a diesel myself I can only go by the description Todd put in the original post which does not say what he used to undo the 3rd bolt nor how easy or difficult it was, just that undoing the bolts for the metal pipe bracket allowed moving the pipe out of the way sufficiently to access the 3rd bolt on the EGR valve..

That's quite a bit of gunk.
Have you read through the thread about oil on the air filter and looked into installing a Provent ?

It is recommended not to remove the egr to use a blanking plate. These worked well in older diesel engines but the modern smarter deisels will see the function not working and throw a MIL light.
