There is a Penrite C4 oil out now that works very nicely, if you don't mind the price.
I don't like the Castrol that Nissan use for the Diesels, so I'm always on the lookout for the appropriate Penrite replacement when its on sale.

What's wrong with the Castrol C4? It's the same price as the Penrite C4.

Castrol & Nissan specifically developed it for the M9R.

Re:

Part of my problem is the fresh apprentice monkeys don't know which bottle/drum to refill the car from.
The last time I asked what oil they use, it was 'oh what is in the drum labelled oil' - which is used for petrol and diesel engines...it was a Castrol drum at least, but no-one was able to tell me exactly what grade was in it.
Later on I found out it was synthetic 5W-30, but nothing else. Other than it met 'specs'.

That entire visit filled me with confidence. Good thing I had supplied my own oil and I noticed through the door to the service area that it was being used in my car at least. (The only time I've been able to see my car from that door whenever I've had a service done).

No, I'll continue to supply an oil that I know works very well in my car.
So you see, my problem isn't with Castrol, but Nissan.

Re:

In that case, make sure you keep ALL your receipts for the Penrite oil you purchase, because if you ever have an engine related warranty issue, Nissan will blame your "customer supplied" oil as listed on the service invoices by the dealer in an attempt to avoid fixing your vehicle, at which point the onus will solely be on you to prove that the oil you provided was up to Nissan's specifications.

I also highly doubt that any Nissan dealer would be stupid enough to use just any old Synthetic 5W30 oil when Nissan has upgraded their specification from C3 to C4.

I'd also suggest that if a dealer was so stupid that Nissan would want to know which dealer that was.

Re: MIL and EGR

I had a number of MIL episodes (see my previous posts)
Since making sure I close the fuel tank securely (2 clicks on the cap) and making sure my oil level is 10cm less than max on the dip stick, my MIL has not come on again.
I took it for a 10,000 run Brisbane to Darwin towing a camper trailer and back since having the oil changed keeping the revs as slow as possible most of the time (Avg 8.5l/100).
Last 3000k I have driven mostly in short bursts with perhaps a 15km run at 100k/h once every 2 weeks.
Car has done 66000km so far.
I haven't changed the oil for 15k and it has only lost half a litre, looks no dirtier than it did the next week after I last had it changed.
I get 7L/100 on the highway and 10L/100 around home because Brisbane is very hilly. (2009 Auto, diesel)

Re:

tedsmithau,

Like any engine, the M9R likes fresh oil and a filter change, the M9R moreso than many others.

Why run your oil for 15,000km, when the Nissan recommended service & oil change interval is a maximum 10,000km?

It's also recommended that in constant high speed, towing, high temp or stop start operation, to change oil every 5,000km or 6mths. Your recent Darwin trip ticks 3 of the boxes which warrant 5,000km oil changes.

Given that Oil and Filter for the M9R is about $90 plus labour, I can't understand why anyone would risk blowing up a motor.

What/where are you buying? That's incredibly cheap!

Re:

I only have my diesel XTrail serviced at a dealer so that it has the correct C4 spec oil put in it.

Oil approx. $10-$12 per lt. (depending on the dealer)
Filter approx. $18-$25 (depending on the dealer)

Apologies for the typo. (I meant to type $90 NOT $80 and have edited my post accordingly)

Re:

I agree with Charlie250 on being paranoid about the oil the mechanic puts in the M9R - with so many muppets out there you need to be careful. I even check with the guy who does the service to ensure it's correct.

My Exy has always been serviced by a Nissan dealer....primarily so that if I had a warranty claim, they'd have fewer chances of not honouring the claim. Thus far, it's worked. My Nissan warranty is about to run out but I still have my packaged extended warranty and the same philosophy will apply. I hope!

Re:

Ok people. I've made a few phone calls re the current spec FULLY SYNTHETIC C4 5W30 oil for the M9R (diesel engine)

It is made by Castrol

It's available from Nissan spare parts in a 5lt container & will set you back $60.

Castrol sell it as Edge Professional C4 5W 30 in 5lt, 20lt & 209lt sizes.

Castrol product details for the 20lt drum are;

Castrol Edge Professional C4 5W 30
20lt - Part No. 3379809
It should set you back $215-$240
