The EGR pipe is what is blocked which should be at the front. The EGR valve is at the back of the motor just before the turbo so not sure what happens with that.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Toddyh03)Fri, 04 Jan 2013 15:57:28 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069818,from=rss#post2069818https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069818,from=rss#post2069818Todd, the picture of the "swirl' mod actually is on the side of the motor, (R/H side looking from the front) note the oil filler cap on the rocker cover. Even the EGR pipe on mine runs in front of the motor. They do experience slightly higher Exhaust temperatures but nothing to really worry the engine.nondisclosed_email@example.com (cooch t31)Fri, 04 Jan 2013 13:49:15 +0000 Re: Leaking EGR Valvehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069805,from=rss#post2069805https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069805,from=rss#post2069805Tony it may or may not be a similar set up. As the X-trail diesel is an east-west engine everything shown in pics in those threads is behind the engine. Very difficult to access. I also read some threads last night where people have seen huge increases in exhaust temp while highway cruising after blocking the EGR. When I get time I will try to pull out the whole valve (not just the control) and see how much soot etc has collected.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Toddyh03)Fri, 04 Jan 2013 06:57:40 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069802,from=rss#post2069802https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069802,from=rss#post2069802Have a good look at this3.0 litre EGR/ butterfly and swirl thread in a Navara forum which describes what it does and heaps of pics to show what to do. Might be a similar set up in yours. Then there is this, a plate that blocks the EGR completely just by replacing a gasket. Have a look at this thread which shows how and where you can blkock the EGR. They are both big threads but very informative.nondisclosed_email@example.com (cooch t31)Fri, 04 Jan 2013 06:09:13 +0000 Re: Leaking EGR Valvehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069771,from=rss#post2069771https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069771,from=rss#post2069771I would have to see how they do that Tony before I could comment. I can't see how it would work at this stage because as it opens the gases spool up the turbo. If you blocked it closed I would imagine the turbo would never spool up. As it stands the EGR valve is controlled by a relay/solenoid which creates suction on the EGR valve. What would you do with this relay if you blocked the EGR valve? I blocked the solenoid hose a couple of time last night with my finger and I don't think it liked it much. Do the Navara and Patrol guys block the EGR valve then bypass it somehow?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Toddyh03)Thu, 03 Jan 2013 12:34:45 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069769,from=rss#post2069769https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069769,from=rss#post2069769I wonder if you can block the EGR on the X trail like the Navara and Patrol boys do.nondisclosed_email@example.com (cooch t31)Thu, 03 Jan 2013 11:24:11 +0000 Leaking EGR Valvehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069768,from=rss#post2069768https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069768,from=rss#post2069768Just recently I noticed that If I really put the boot in and accelerate hard I was loosing turbo pressure at around 3.5-4k revs. Also the car felt slightly sluggish from a standing start. After reading about some Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valves clogging up with blowby oil I thought this may be the culprit. So finally last night I went to pull off the EGR valve (disc looking thing at the back of the engine, above the turbo and next to the air intake pipe into the turbo). I found that one of the nuts was slightly loose. I borrowed a small hand vacuum pump from work and found out that the valve was not sealing properly. Had to go to Bunnings to buy a narrow 10mm spanner to reach the nut and do it up tight. Tested with the hand pump and was able to get better negative pressure and hold it. Gave the car a kick in the guts this morning and all appears to be better. Very simple fix for a very annoying issue. Either check these nuts yourself from time to time or get your mechanic to do it when it's serviced. Otherwise one day you might go to overtake like I did and realise you have no turbo when you really need it.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Toddyh03)Thu, 03 Jan 2013 11:06:19 +0000
