Re: Guess the location

Hi John.
It is indeed the Mackay harbour/marina on the Pioneer River.

My first hint about Captain Cook on 1 June 1770 shows in his journal for that day that he named a local landmark Cape Palmerston. Further googling shows the cape as being in the Mackay area.

My second hint about a river being involved with a name associated with explorers was the Pioneer River.....Pioneer/Explorer........oh well.

Over to you John and I hope your moving house experience went smoothly.

Re:

Hi Dave,

I actually couldn't find any reference for Cook's whereabouts on 1 Jun 1770. The only thing I could find was when HMS Endeavour hit the reef near Cooktown on 11 Jun 1770, so I worked back down the coast from there and looked at places that they would have taken 10 days to sail from.

Will have to see if I can find a good location picture.

Cheers

John

Re: Guess the l.ocation

Hi John.
When I type captain cook 1 june 1770 into the google.com.au search box, the second reference is for Cook's Journal: Daily Entries, 11 June 1770.

When I open that site there is a backward and forward arrow at the top left hand side of page that allows you to scroll backwards or forwards to other daily entries. If you scroll back to 1 June it will display Cook's journal entries for the day in which he mentions Cape Palmerston.

Give it a go.......

cheers

I actually looked at that site, but didn't see the scroll bar.

Re: Guess the location

Ok.
A view from the Sydney Tower looking over the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney with the Sydney Football Stadium and Sydney Cricket Ground in the distance.
A part of Hyde Park on the corner of College St and Liverpool St is at the bottom right.

Well that's my guess.

cheers
