Northern NSW Trip

Well the family and I are on the Road again! This time we're traveling from Sydney to Armidale via Gloucester along the Thunderbolt Way, quite a pretty and fun drive. The climb to Nowendoc was steep and the X-Trail struggled up the hill in forth/fifth gear at 80km/hr! The temperature in Goucester was a balmy 20 degrees with Nowendoc registering a bone chilling 5 degrees. A drop of 15 degrees in an hour!

We arrived in Armidale at 6:30pm. The trip took 6 and half hours. Fuel consumption registering 9.7 litres/100km. We stayed with friends for a couple of days then left there yesterday for the drive to Lismore via Tenterfield where Henry Parkes gave his Federation Speech which triggered the move to Independant nationhood. The things ya learn eh? The X-trail performed well with fuel consumption falling to 9.3 litres/100kms. The car has been filled twice so far with 300 Kms still to go until empty.

Today we did a quick drive to Nimbin which was quite an education!

Tomorrow, we will head to Ballina where we will stay for two nights. But more on that later.
The Northern Districts are awash in X-Trails! Are there any members who live up this way? I would love to say "hi".

More to come soon.

Oh thats a fun area to play in and look around.
I used to roam around that area for work in the spring/ early summer one year. The heater got a fair work out in the old hiace work van.

Be good to see the pics to remember what it is like there. That way I can work out where to stop on my next run through there for a road trip.

Northern NSW Trip (Cont)

Today we left Lismore for Ballina. Leaving at 8:30 am, knowing that we couldn't check in at the Lakeside Holiday Park until 2pm, I decided to take my daughter to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctury. The plan was to drive the 1.5 hours to the Queensland Border treat my daughter Danica to an unforgettable day seeing all manner of creatures culminating in a grand finale feeding Lorikets for which the place is famous.

Upon arrival, my carefully executed plan fell apart, the bird feeding was between 8-9am and 4-5pm. This meant that we have timed our arrival to miss both of these times!!! After explaining to Danica that we would not be feeding the birds I had to make up for her disappointment by buying her a little souvenir. Oh well it's the thought that counts.

I must say you have to run the gauntlet of souvenir shops (3) before you even get into the place. The price of admission fairly took my breath away with Adult admission costing $49! Danica is not quite three so she was free. However, children aged four to 12 will cost a hefty $33. So be warned!

The X-Trail went well with fuel consumption reaching 9.2litres/100kms. I will add photos once I get home.

We will stay here another night before heading to Bellingen on Friday.

So stay tuned....

Northern NSW Trip (Part 3)

Well we have arrived in Bellingen after a three hour drive punctuated with road works and constantly adjusting speed as a result.

We stopped off at The Big Banana for a rest and look around. I have always enjoyed stopping there.

Once lunch was over, we drove the short distance to Bellingen arriving at 2:00pm.
Bellingen is a picturesque town with entry of shops to peruse in. We have nearly come full circle since leaving Armidale on Monday, being only 150kms away along the Waterfall Way, which climbs to the top of the plateau where The town of Dorrigo is situated only 29 Kms away.

We will stop here in Bellingen for two days then we'll head off to Kempsey on Sunday.

Re: Northern NSW Trip

It's a beautiful area, I grew up there and got to explore quite a few areas and know a lot of the hidden gems.

I now live in the central west area, Forbes specifically, and I'm getting to now this area and the tracks in the immediate vicinity. I'm thinking of going across to Orange and having a look at Ophir.

If people want any information about places to see, or drives to do, then let me know.
