Re: Very Delayed trip report from Aug/Sep 09 and May 10
Great stuff. Looks like an awesome trip. Which way did you head home? Did you end up doing the Birdsville Track and Plenty Highway?

Re: Very Delayed trip report from Aug/Sep 09 and Apr/May 10
Part 2
While in Townsville on a training course a friend from the US visited and we started part 2 of the tour. She missed out on round 1 thanks to work, so I decided to do round 2.
First part was a little stop for a cruise around The Whitsundays for a few days.
After that it was a short stop at home to repack the exy for the drive and off we went to the Gold Coast for a couple of days. Sea World and Carrumbin were the items on the list.
Then it was time to stop into wet and windy Sydney for a few days and a little side tour of the Hunter Valley winerys.
However the weather cleared up on the day we left of course, which made a nice drive to Melbourne in the afternoon/night. But while driving into Holbrook we both got a suprise by seeing this in the dark.
A bit of a WFT moment and we went back to look at it and read the story of why it was there. Very interesting.
Once we got on our way again, we ventured into central Melbourne for our motel for the night; 1 am arrival. After leaving at a resonable hour from Melbourne, via Costco, we proceed towards the Great Ocean Road. With a few stops on the way to look around.
My friend wanted to see a big herd of Kangaroos, so I found some for her easily enough.
We found many lighthouses to stop and look at all around the coast
But on this one I tried to take a photo from up top
Once we managed to leave the wonderful southern coast, we ventured into Mt Gambier to see the Blue Lake and the gardens.
Once we left there we drove west towards Adelaide, but found a few caves to stop in at.
And a nice sunset to watch for a while
We stayed at a Friends house in Adelaide for the night and the 4 of us went to Kangaroo Island for a long weekend to have a good look around down there.
However our leaving was delayed while someone drove their house off the ferry
We returned to Adelaide for the last night down there.
The next night we stayed at my favourite place in Coober Pedy, The Desert Cave Hotel.
Salt and Pepper is one of the names of this pair of hills
Another drive up to Lake Eyre since it was filling again
The drive back to Coober Pedy to head north, as the Oodnadata track was very damaged.
Once we got back onto the Stuart Hwy going north I encountered a flock of corellas.... with 1 stupid bird in it. Flew right into the front grill. After a while I thought better make sure it wasn't stuck and going to stink later on. And look what I find
The bugger squarked its head off once it saw me. Chewed a few holes in the hammer handle too as payback for hitting it. These are 2 of the only 3 photos of the entire event as my friend was unable to stand due to laughing....
Back to Ulura and Kata Tjuta again for a few days.
Sunrise camel ride time
I got to see wild camels finally!!!
After finally seeing camels in the wild on the second run to Uluru. We have the only wild camels in the world, which is strange since they are not native to this island.
However we left Uluru and drove up to Devils marbles for the sunset, a fair distance in one hit but a hint of things to come. We stayed overnight in Three-Ways at the roadhouse/caravan park.
Next morning we got up and went to look at the Devils Pebles, 20kms back to the south.
Once we pottered around there for an hour we thought we should head home since my friend had to fly out in 2.5 days time from Rocky. Well we started driving and didn't really stop until we got to Rocky...20hrs later.
Spent the last day on one of the local beaches relaxing in the sun and reading books.
[edit] fix a typo and add the last part which I seem to have forgotten to write last night.

Re:
Wow wow wow wow wow, those pictures are absolutely amazing, you should work for tourism Australia and promote our country, you'd do a better job than the clowns there at the moment.
I was glued to the screen reading and looking at your awesome pictures, what a trip.
All that in 4 weeks, I wanna go right now after seeing that.
Thank you sooooooo much for sharing, definitely worth the wait.

2nd part is probably better again. Great stuff. I'm looking at heading that way in a year or so and your report has got me absolutely itching to go.
