Very Delayed trip report from Aug/Sep 09 and May 10

Aug/Sep 09
Left Rocky with the exy packed up to the hilt and a little room left for my sister in law and headed to Brissy for the Pink concert that night.
The following day after the concert I left my sister in law at the airport and repacked the car with some of my stuff on the front seat and the swag rolled out in the back.

The swag was on a board that was over both my spare and the dry food box. I had an esky, a fridge/freezor and my bag of clothes for the next 4 weeks.
I pretty much headed west from Brissy to Quilpie & Eromanga. Then into SA to Innamincka where I stumbled onto the races, alot of fun to be had there. Once I managed to get up I made my way down the Strzelecki Track to Lyndhurst and up to Marree, I made a few random stops along the way.
Image
I stayed there for a few days looking around in William Ck, a flight over Lake Eyre and a drive over to Roxby Downs and Andamooka.
Image Image
From there it was to Coober Pedy for 2 days to look around at the local sights. I stayed in the underground part of the Desert Cave motel.
Image
The moon plain near Coober Pedy

Stayed a night at one of the properties you can camp at and left for a sunrise photo of the painted hills.
Image Image
Drove over to William Ck to pick up the next part of the Oodnadatta Track and headed off to Marla.
After a short stop there for fuel, tyre repair and food, I drove up to Uluru and got a motel for the next few nights.
Image Image Image Image
Image Image Image
I did a fair bit of walking around at Kata Tjuta and Uluru before going up to Kings Canyon for a few days.

Then it was off to Alice Springs for the night, back packers accomodation time.
Time to return to camping this time in the West Macdonald Ranges at various water holes and camping areas for 3 days.
Image Image Image

Once I left there it was time to stop at that nice backplacker place again before going north to get to the Devils Marbles by sunset to watch the rocks glow.
Image Image

An overnight stay in at Three-Ways before the long drive east towards home.
I stopped for lunch and refuel at the Barkly since it was that windy I was nearly using twice as much fuel as normal.
However I made it to Mt Isa for the night and set off again early. A little distraction caught my eyes, the old town of Mary Kathleen and Queenslands only (former) uranium mine.
Image Image Image

After that it was a camping stop in Winton before a stop at the dinosaur museum. Very interesting little place that. (They have since built a much bigger museum).
On my way through Longreach I thought I would stop at the Hall of Fame to have a look around and I manage to find the rodeo about to start. Something even better to watch for a few hours before last 6.5 hrs drive home.

At this point I had managed to make my way around the entire Cooper Basin and saw as many of the Burke and Wills markings as I could.

Great stuff. Looks like an awesome trip. Which way did you head home? Did you end up doing the Birdsville Track and Plenty Highway?

Re: Very Delayed trip report from Aug/Sep 09 and Apr/May 10

Part 2

While in Townsville on a training course a friend from the US visited and we started part 2 of the tour. She missed out on round 1 thanks to work, so I decided to do round 2.

First part was a little stop for a cruise around The Whitsundays for a few days.
Image Image Image
Image Image

After that it was a short stop at home to repack the exy for the drive and off we went to the Gold Coast for a couple of days. Sea World and Carrumbin were the items on the list.
Image Image
Then it was time to stop into wet and windy Sydney for a few days and a little side tour of the Hunter Valley winerys.
Image Image
However the weather cleared up on the day we left of course, which made a nice drive to Melbourne in the afternoon/night. But while driving into Holbrook we both got a suprise by seeing this in the dark.
Image
A bit of a WFT moment and we went back to look at it and read the story of why it was there. Very interesting.
Once we got on our way again, we ventured into central Melbourne for our motel for the night; 1 am arrival. After leaving at a resonable hour from Melbourne, via Costco, we proceed towards the Great Ocean Road. With a few stops on the way to look around.
Image Image Image
Image Image Image
Image Image
Image Image
My friend wanted to see a big herd of Kangaroos, so I found some for her easily enough.
Image
We found many lighthouses to stop and look at all around the coast
Image
But on this one I tried to take a photo from up top
Image
Once we managed to leave the wonderful southern coast, we ventured into Mt Gambier to see the Blue Lake and the gardens.
Image Image
Once we left there we drove west towards Adelaide, but found a few caves to stop in at.
Image Image
And a nice sunset to watch for a while
Image Image

We stayed at a Friends house in Adelaide for the night and the 4 of us went to Kangaroo Island for a long weekend to have a good look around down there.
Image Image Image
Image Image
However our leaving was delayed while someone drove their house off the ferry
Image
We returned to Adelaide for the last night down there.
The next night we stayed at my favourite place in Coober Pedy, The Desert Cave Hotel.
Image
Salt and Pepper is one of the names of this pair of hills
Image
Another drive up to Lake Eyre since it was filling again
Image Image
Image Image
The drive back to Coober Pedy to head north, as the Oodnadata track was very damaged.
Image
Once we got back onto the Stuart Hwy going north I encountered a flock of corellas.... with 1 stupid bird in it. Flew right into the front grill. After a while I thought better make sure it wasn't stuck and going to stink later on. And look what I find
Image
The bugger squarked its head off once it saw me. Chewed a few holes in the hammer handle too as payback for hitting it. These are 2 of the only 3 photos of the entire event as my friend was unable to stand due to laughing....
Image

Back to Ulura and Kata Tjuta again for a few days.
Image Image
Sunrise camel ride time
Image
I got to see wild camels finally!!!
Image

After finally seeing camels in the wild on the second run to Uluru. We have the only wild camels in the world, which is strange since they are not native to this island.
However we left Uluru and drove up to Devils marbles for the sunset, a fair distance in one hit but a hint of things to come. We stayed overnight in Three-Ways at the roadhouse/caravan park.
Next morning we got up and went to look at the Devils Pebles, 20kms back to the south.
Once we pottered around there for an hour we thought we should head home since my friend had to fly out in 2.5 days time from Rocky. Well we started driving and didn't really stop until we got to Rocky...20hrs later.
Spent the last day on one of the local beaches relaxing in the sun and reading books.

[edit] fix a typo and add the last part which I seem to have forgotten to write last night.

No. I didn't end up on the Birdsville Track and the Plenty as yet. That may happen in 2 yrs time I think if I can fit it in the next driving tour I do.

Re:

Wow wow wow wow wow, those pictures are absolutely amazing, you should work for tourism Australia and promote our country, you'd do a better job than the clowns there at the moment.

I was glued to the screen reading and looking at your awesome pictures, what a trip.
All that in 4 weeks, I wanna go right now after seeing that.

Thank you sooooooo much for sharing, definitely worth the wait.

Re:

Added the end of the 2nd part finally, forgot it last night.

Oh yes I am going to do this again, but with the new car and a big further. Like a possible run of Rocky to Darwin for at least a week, over to Broome a slow run to Perth/Albany. East to Port Augusta. Then it depending on time if I explore western NSW or leave that for another run.

Thinking of Sydney in Dec/Jan this year for 3 weeks if I can. Or if I buy the new camera I want, as that will cost more than a Sydney holiday.

2nd part is probably better again. Great stuff. I'm looking at heading that way in a year or so and your report has got me absolutely itching to go.

Re:

Only time there was an issue was when I learnt what the little red and black flags meant on the road between Coober Pedy and William Ck.
Red means caution, there is a minor damage to the road in that location. Black means there is a bloody big hole or washout.
Landed the front end of the exy into a black flag one at 100km/h and thought I had broken something. Turned out no damage and we kept on going, while being very wary of those little flags.

Other than that, nothing of note really. The exy performed as expected. Doesn't use oil, make funny/weird noises drive strange or anything.
I'm going to miss it when I sell it later this year.
