Re:

For a dash cam I think the most important aspect (to me anyway) is for the footage to be clear enough to make the rego plates recognisable and its ability to operate in low light. I rarely use the dash cam as means to record a trip but it is indeed an added a bonus if the camera can record footage in high quality for it to be used for such purpose.

I am now seriously thinking of fitting a rear-facing one too.

Indeed. In our situation it would have been handy to know how this girl ended up in our rear end. She didn't hit too hard, so I suspect she was sitting behind us, but too busy watching the traffic she would be merging with and not looking at what was in front of her.

Re: Black Box Car Camera Recorder

I just got I got my camera and took it for a quick test drive around the block. Initial impression is excellent. The picture is really clear and sharp, and silky smooth. File size is pretty large. Just going around the block took 4:31 and the file is a 328mb mp4. I've got a 32gb class 10 card coming for it, but for now I scavenged an 8gb class 4 card just to test it out, and it seems to work fine.

It fits perfectly behind the mirror and doesn't poke out at all, so I'm very happy about that.

Re:

Good stuff Drew. It is a very nice and capable camera indeed and I have been using it for a number of years now. The size of the memory card doesn't really matter if you have it set to record in loop mode, it will just delete the oldest file as the memory card gets full. I bigger memory card is good to have when you want to shoot video footage of a trip or something and keep these files handy but then again, there is a setting in the camera which allows you to protect single video files from being over-written and deleted which I also found very useful.

Re: Black Box Car Camera Recorder

I'm a bit disappointed with the night time performance. Can't see anything except one little spot where the headlights are brightest. I'll have a fiddle with the settings and see if there's any that will improve it.

Re:

That's really strange because my camera is identical to yours and you can clearly see HERE that low light video footage is pretty clear.

Here are some screenshots for comparison.

High beam with just street lights:

Low beam:

I only just noticed I set the year wrong on the camera lol.

I think I might need to adjust my headlight aim upwards a bit too.

Re:

I think the image quality is very normal, as the main purpose of the in-dash camera is to capture the objects in close proximity to your car rather than give you distance view and clearance. In the first pic it is achieving that with the aid of street lighting, but in the 2nd and 3rd pics, you're driving in a completely dark street, so it is natural for the camera to just capture the bright spot of the headlights and give you an indication of where the object (i.e. the car in front of view) would normally be to record the details.

You can always voice the number plate if you have the internal mic on too, Its what I do when I see examples of stupid driving, just in case there is some sort of followup required.

Re: Black Box Car Camera Recorder

Jalal, does your camera actually have an option to turn audio recording off in the menu? Mine doesn't seem to have one. I wonder if we have slightly different cameras or firmware.

Mine used up the 5GB I had free on the temporary memory card, recording 1 hour and 30 mins. I just put the new 32GB card in and it says it can record over 8 hours now. I probably didn't need to get such a large card with the H.264 camera lol. Ah well, they're cheap enough these days.
