Yes Dave, that's what I meant by the "centre glovebox" emoticon

For those reading this and wondering if the T31 centre storage compartment copmes with a power source from the factory, the answer is no, you will need to run a power source wire yourself (do a forum search for this modification).

Re: Black Box Car Camera Recorder

Jalal you mentioned somewhere about reducing the file size of videos for this thing but keeping HD so still looks OK on youtube. Could you provide more details? Got mine yesterday. The files are massive.

Just read through the thread, awesome video on the beach...but it did lack singing!

Jalalski, just confirming, is this the Video Camera that you were using. At $50 seems like a no-brainer.

Also, have you gotten around to running the power cable behind the windscreen lining. If so, can you drop me a pic of what it looks like inside? I'm assuming its pretty easy to do?

Yep, that's the one and it seems the Aussue seller finally dropped the price to match the Tiwanese sellers. Yes, I ran the power cable behind the windscreen lining and got it running down the side pillar through the front of the dash and then feeding into the top storage box for power, so only this part of the wire is visible on the dash.

Re: Black Box Car Camera Recorder

I'm looking into getting one of these cameras like PeteLangford linked to above.
However, since I'm rather tall and sit up so high, I often find myself looking around and under the rearview mirror, as it's directly at eye level for me. I'm worried that the camera will block my vision even more than the mirror already does. I can't really tell from the pictures of just the camera on its own how it compares in size to the mirror.

So could someone who has one please do me a favour and get some pics of what it looks like mounted behind/on the rearview mirror?
Cheers!

Re: Black Box Car Camera Recorder

Hi Drew,

This is a good review of a similarly sized dash camera to the one you asked about and it shows a good mounting spot and the size of the dash cam compared to the rear view mirror. It is indeed very compact and doesn't affect the vision no matter where you fit it on the windscreen.

Re:

After trying two of the cheaper options and being disappointed, I purchased the PanoramaII blackbox dashcam earlier this year from ebay on the recommendation of a mate.

While the cheaper cams claimed to be full HD, the encoding was so bad, it was worse than SD. I felt that a really important aspect of having one of these cams should be the ability to read number plates (and to have high quality video to include in our holiday home movies).

The Panorama II produces very good quality video, even in low light and is small enough to sit, out of sight, up behind the rear view mirror.

This week we had the opportunity to test it out on a real crash when some young girl rear-ended our car.

While we don't have a rear facing camera, the best thing about having the cam was being able to review the footage to and recount to the insurance company exactly what happened and to be able to answer questions like "was there a give way sign on the slipway".

Definitely money well spent.

Re: Black Box Car Camera Recorder

Thanks for the replies guys.
I ended up ordering the G sensor/Motion detect version, due to it having a larger sensor, and using the H.264 codec for smaller file sizes. It can also record 1080p in 30fps rather than the 15fps of the cheaper version.
I'll let you know how it performs once it arrives.

Re: Black Box Car Camera Recorder

For future reference, there are some good sources for general things such as Car Camera's.

Personally I've found the review site Techmoan to be excellent. (Google it yourself, its' safer.)

Otherwise, there is a Dashcam section of Whirlpool contributed to by Australian owners who do not hold back if it does not cut the mustard. Usual fanbois get blasted out by weight of opinion.

It always comes down to what you want and what you are prepared to pay.

Watching the video's on this site will give a clue but they have all been compacted & translated by the Host site.

H.264 seems to be the standard today & one expects 30 fps at 1080p for any camera over $100.

The important part is hidden. That is the Mb/s record rate area. Here be Dragons.
It doesn't matter much to most people, but I like optimum efficiency so it matters to me.

After reading WP & this forum as well as watching Techmoan and DashCam, you will be sufficiently informed to make a reasoned decision as to the make & model you prefer... as well as being profoundly confused emoticon
