Caves to Caves Forum Trip 2012

We just completed the caves to caves trip in steady rain on Saturday 16 June. We had a convoy of 7 cars (5 Xtrails and 2 Navaras). The list of who attended
Toddyh03 - T31, lift, bash plates and A/T tyres
Cooch_t31 - Navara bash plates and A/T tyres
dlpeek - T31, lift, bash plates and A/T tyres
sporpion2777 - T30, lift and bash plates
Jupitor2 - T31 standard
ArthurV - T30, A/T tyres
Daniel - Navara - the man with the winch

Image

I'm gonna keep this very brief and leave it up to the others to describe the day. We started at Mittagong Maccas at 7am and proceeded to Wombeyan Caves along Wombeyan Caves Road. We entered the Blue Moutnains National Park at Langs Roads before turning onto Goker Fire Track.
Image

This took us to the Range Fire Trail which headed north to Mt Werong. At the end there was a fun bog hole which we all had a play in. Daniel in his Navara created a bit of a tidal wave and a few of us ended up with wet feet.

At Mt Werong we aired down and had a go at some side tracks. Upper Mt Werong Trail was first. The creek crossing was straight forward but Dave found out quickly how important momentum is getting up steep, slippery climbs. His car slid sideways across the track and touched a tree. Thanks to Daniels winch we got him going again.
we carried on to Middle Werong Fire Trail which has a very steep climb out of the creek. Everyone managed this successfully using the right foot down approach.

We headed to Banshea Road, along to Kowmung River Fire Trail to Dingo Dell. Some of the clay was slippery but no issues. We headed to Kowmung River and it looked very crossable so across we went. It was only knee deep. After the crossing there was a bit deep puddle before the climb out.

Here we climbed up to Kowmung River Fire Trail to Kanagra Road and headed to Jenolan Caves and home. Not before Arthur tried to pull over and found some soft stuff...sorry mate I had to show it.

I hope everyone had a good day and has their own photos/videos and input. Lets do it again soon.

Re:

We had a great day which had everything from Kangaroo strikes, tyres popping off rims (lucky Ray's spare wheel carrier came in handy), a small dent in Dave's tailgate and 2 recoveries with winch and straps.

The rain made it a lot of fun.

X Trails did well considering the conditions and proved that with a bit of momentum can climb just about anything. Just look at the videos.

Another fantastic forum outing and another great trip report from Todd, thanks for an enjoyable day.

Can't wait for the next one and to see everyone's pics.

Re:

Just got home this morning, Sunday, thanks to everyone involved, especially Todd, had a great time depite the rain, it was good to see what a exy can do, I really had my doubts on those harder sections when I saw them but the xtrails did really well. I did leave mine behind on the harder sections due to it being stock standard, I know I wimped out.
It was interesting to note that out of the 5 xtrails 4 had a incident of some sort,
1st I hit a roo, just a glancing blow.
2nd Dave lost momentum slid back and bumped a tree and needed winching
3rd Ray managed to get stuck in mud on the side of a track and needed snatching
4th Arthur managed to run his tyre off the rim, needed 2 jacks and a hole dug to get his spare on
Will post photos soon, just need to remember how to do it.

Nice one guys, I'm glad to see the crappy weather didn't cancel the trip.
Wow, how did you manage to pop a tyre from its rim, emoticon , I've never seen that one before.

Re: Caves to Caves Forum Trip 2012

First off........thank you, thank you and thank you a thousand times more.

Thank you to Todd for organising the trip.
Thank you to Daniel for use of your winch to get me out of a rather tight situation. The photos don't seem to give justice to how steep the slope was and how difficult it was to extract my Exy out of the mess I got it into.
I sit here writing this still thinking about how the hell my exy could have been recovered without the asistance of the winch...................
Thank you to Tony, Ray, Arthur and Peter as well for all your willingness to assist with the recovery......your skills and committment were awseome.
I am used to beach driving with ESP turned off.......it just did not occur to me to turn off ESP for that steep slope and when I lost momentum that was it....slid sideways backwards and thank got did not hit that tree with any sort of speed......just a slight dent in rear tailgate to remind me of an otherwise perfect day, with great fun and with great company.

After that incident, the next hill ascent and especially the Kowmung River and following ascent were a breeze with ESP off and in 4WD lock.....lesson learnt the hard way.

All photos/vids currently posted far exceed what I managed to capture.....I could not improve on them.

Certainly looking forward to future outings being a lot more comfortable now with the abilities of the exy in the bush and having learnt what NOT to do on steep slopes.

cheers all
